best pleco food

The best pleco food is different from regular fish food in the sense that it does not float. Plecos and similar fish species are bottom feeders. This means that their mouths are on their heads pointing downward. It would, therefore, be almost impossible for them to eat floating fish food.

Some people think that they do not need to feed their plecos since they eat the algae that grows on the glass. However, that is not always the case. Most of the time, a single pleco can eat so much algae that the tank would not be able to keep up production.

This article will help you sift through the many different brands of pleco food so that you will end up with the best. You will be getting some shopping tips and a couple of product recommendations. Once you reach the end, you will know all the things you need to know to make the right choice.

Best Pleco Food Reviews

1. Ultra Fresh Vegetables Shrimp Pie Pleco Food

ultra fresh vegetables shrimp pie pleco food

The nice thing about this product is that it does not cloud the water as much as other brands. These pellets soften after a couple of minutes but you can’t expect them to deteriorate and make the water murky. They keep their shape for up to an hour, which does not happen often as they usually get eaten immediately.

One of the reasons my plecos just love these pellets is that they contain dried sword prawns. This ingredient adds a lot of flavors that plecos and other fish just love, which is why it is one amazing option for the best food for pleco growth. Whenever I plop this pellet into the tank, other fish would swarm around it, not just the pleco.

Aside from the flavor, this product also has tons of vitamins and minerals to keep your plecos healthy. It contains all the required nutrients that plecos need for healthy skin and scales. You will be surprised at how much better your pleco will look after a week or so. I did not think my pleco was particularly beautiful but now, it certainly looks great.

Another thing that I liked about it is that it quickly sinks to the bottom of the tank, even without soaking. I did not need to worry about the pleco having to fight the other fish for the food. It was already at the bottom before the others even noticed. Plecos and other bottom feeders need not compete with the other fish for this product.

However, even though I like this product, it would have been much better if the pellets were a bit bigger. Plecos can get big quite fast and these little pellets are too small to keep them interested. Ideally, the pellets should be bigger than their mouths to encourage the plecos’ foraging instincts.

Pros
  • Softens quickly but remains intact
  • Contains sword prawns for added flavor and protein
  • Enhanced with vitamins and minerals
  • Sinks immediately to the bottom of the tank
Cons
  • A bit small
  • Somewhat pricey

Although this is a bit on the expensive side when it comes to pleco food, I can still say that it is a worthwhile purchase. I have never seen my pleco look as healthy as it is now, and it is all thanks to this pleco food.

2. Aquatic Foods Plecos Sinking Wafers

aquatic foods plecos sinking wafers

Plecos grow quite quickly and I noticed that they do so much quicker with this fish food. This product contains a good amount of protein, which greatly increases the rate at which they grow. I also keep a couple of breeder stock and I discovered that these wafers are great for the fry. This makes them grow faster and more resilient to illnesses.

Aside from protein, these algae wafers also contain a healthy amount of fiber. This greatly improves the digestion of the fish who eat it. This means that the plecos will be able to absorb more nutrients from the food they eat but produce less waste. In other words, the pleco will not be adding much to the ammonia load of the tank.

These wafers come in the shape of discs that are also the perfect size for plecos. These are big enough that they will not fit entirely in their mouths but small enough that a single pleco can finish eating one wafer in five to ten minutes. One wafer is usually enough for one pleco every day.

One of the things I liked about this product is that it does not cloud the water easily. When the wafers sink in the water, they will soften after just a minute or two but they will not disintegrate and make the water murky. I have used other similar algae wafers, and some of them have turned the water green.

What I did notice about this product is that a couple of my fish, who are notoriously picky eaters, will not go near them. It is a good thing that my plecos like these but unfortunately, my catfish do not seem to care for these at all.

Pros
  • Contains a lot of protein to promote fish growth
  • Has fiber for improved digestion
  • Just the right size for plecos
  • Does not break up as easily as other wafers do
Cons
  • Takes a bit longer to sink
  • Not ideal for picky eaters

I am fortunate enough to have fish that are not that picky when it comes to food. However, it is hard to find fish that will not eat this fish food, at least in my experience. Plecos sure do love these and the ones that I have become significantly healthier since I started giving them these wafers.

3. Zoo Med Laboratories Pleco Banquet Block

zoo med laboratories pleco banquet block

This is the ideal food block if you are usually out of the house. It can last up to five days, depending on the size of the fish that will be eating it. I like using this whenever I am leaving the house for more than a day, just so my plecos and other bottom-feeding fish would have something to eat while I am gone.

Even if I am not leaving the house, I would use these blocks to ensure that my plecos and other bottom-feeding fish are fed. I have a four-inch-long pleco and it takes around two days before he can eat through an entire block. This food block is also great because its form promotes the natural feeding pattern of bottom feeders.

Plecos are not the only fish that like this food. I also keep a couple of shrimps and snails and they cannot get enough of this food block. Of course, these small creatures will not be able to finish this entire block by themselves. This means that there must be at least a small pleco in the tank with them.

The reason why I got this food block is that I feel bad for the plecos having to fight with the other fish in the tank. Some fish food takes a long time before they reach the bottom that the plecos have nothing left for them. This one is so dense and large that they have no trouble feeding anymore.

The only problem that I have with this product is that it initially hardens the water quite significantly. The water hardness is not so high that they harm the fish but the rise is also significant enough that you should address it soon. It also clouds the water a bit but expect it to be cleared up after about an hour or so.

Pros
  • Can last for up to five days (depending on the size of the fish)
  • Ideal for feeding your fish for several days
  • Loved by shrimp, snails, and bettas, too
  • Provides the plecos a chance to feed without fighting with the other fish
Cons
  • Affects the hardness of the water significantly
  • Clouds the water a bit

This is a good solution when you need to leave the house for a couple of days. It is hard enough that it will not dissolve completely even after a couple of days. The hardness also promotes the natural feeding habits of the plecos and other bottom feeders.

4. Hikari Monster Fishes Food

hikari monster fishes food

If you thought your lowly pleco cannot look nice, you will change your mind after you have fed it with the best food for plecos. I have a bristle nose pleco that did not stand out when I first got it but it now has brighter colors and more vibrant patterns. This has kindled an interest inside of me to keep more types of catfish and plecos now.

When it comes to the size, they are just the right size and shape for plecos and other bottom-feeding fish. They are small enough for a single pleco to finish by itself, but not so much that the fish could swallow whole. However, if your pleco grows to its maximum size, these pellets might become too small.

Because these pellets are for bottom feeders, I noticed that they are quite porous and would sink to the bottom almost immediately. This will allow the plecos and other bottom-feeding fish to eat without the other fish stealing their food. The pellets also make sure that your pleco gets the nutrition it needs.

This bristle nose pleco food also contains quite a lot of protein, which is important for the proper growth of fish. If you think that your pleco already grows quite fast, wait until you start feeding it with this product. Aside from making your fish grow faster, the protein content also improves their immune system.

Although I do like this product quite well, it still has a couple of issues that I did not like. The biggest issue I have is that these pellets dissolve too fast and the particles cloud the water. You will need a quite efficient filter to keep the water clean if you are feeding your fish this food.

Pros
  • Enhances the colors of the fish
  • Just the right size for bottom-feeding fish
  • Sinks to the bottom fast
  • Promotes proper growth and boosts immunity
Cons
  • Contains a lot of filler ingredients
  • Dissolves too fast and clouds the water

The nice thing about this product is that it significantly enhances the appearance of your plecos and other bottom-feeding fish. I did not know that they can look as appealing as mine look right now. If you keep catfish, this will make their colors pop out much more.

5. Xtreme Aquatic Foods Cat Scrapers

xtreme aquatic foods cat scrapers

My whole tank would go into a feeding frenzy whenever I plop a couple of these wafers into the water. It is a good thing that it sinks rather quickly to the bottom, or else my pleco would not have a chance to eat. Aside from my pleco, my shrimps and snails also love this product. I sometimes go through one package a week.

Another nice thing about this fish food is that the pellets are in a disc shape. This means that they lay flat on the bottom of the tank, making it easier for bottom-feeding fish like plecos, catfish, and loaches to eat them.

The disc-shaped pellets promote the natural feeding behavior of bottom-feeders. This makes them feel more at home in their artificial environments.

In addition, these fish pellets do not disintegrate quite as fast as other similar products. I have tried other brands of algae wafers and some of them would break apart easily once in the water. The tiny particles they release would also often make the water cloudy. This keeps its shape much longer than most of the other products in the market.

This stuff also contains a bunch of probiotics, thereby encouraging the growth of beneficial bacteria in the guts of plecos. What this means is that your fish will have a much more efficient digestive system. They would be able to get more nutrients out of their food and produce less waste.

I only hoped that this stuff came in a larger container. As it is, you will only be getting a small jar, which would only last me on average around two weeks. Having to purchase every week or so racks up the costs over time. Also, this must be one of the smelliest algae wafers that I have tested so far.

Pros
  • Almost all fish like it, not just the bottom-feeders
  • Shaped into discs to promote natural feeding habits
  • Contains probiotics to improve the fish’s immunity
  • Does not dissolve quickly and will not cloud the water
Cons
  • The container is quite small
  • This product smells quite bad, even compared to other algae wafers

Its repulsive smell might be the reason why all my fish seem to swarm over this food. It works just like how a stink bait would. Also, because my fish do love it quite a lot, it would have been much better if this came in a larger container. It would have lowered the price a bit, and I also do not need to buy a new pack every week or so.

6. Hartz Wardley Fish Food

hartz wardley fish food

This pleco fish food comes enhanced with additional Vitamin C, which helps bolster the immune system of all the fish. I have not had any serious illness breakouts in any of my tanks since I started using this food. And because my fish like this a lot, they have been eating quite heartily, which means they are getting even more nutrition.

This fish food is also easy for fish to digest. Plecos and other bottom-feeding fish already have strong digestive systems, so they have no problem digesting these pellets. Not only can they get the most nutrients from this food, but it also means they make less waste. My fish are healthier and the ammonia level of the water stays low.

This fish food has a specific formulation for bottom-feeders like plecos, loaches, catfish, and others. These pellets sink to the bottom of the tank, unlike traditional fish food that floats on top of the water. This promotes the natural foraging and feeding habits of the bottom feeders.

Here’s the best thing about this fish food, it will look like you have been starving your fish when you feed it to them. They would quickly go into a feeding frenzy when you sprinkle these pellets into the water. Even the picky eaters in my tanks can’t resist this food. It caused a bit of a problem since everyone in the tank competes for the pellets.

I found that it will be better for the plecos to put this food in the tank at night when they are most active. This gives them a better chance at eating. I also did not like how these seem to get suspended in the middle of the water where the plecos cannot reach them.

Pros
  • Contains Vitamin C to boost the fish’s immune system
  • Easy to digest
  • Formulated specifically for bottom feeder fish
  • Even picky eaters love this
Cons
  • Small jar and kind of overpriced
  • Does not sink fast enough

This fish food is almost too good. All the fish in my aquarium love this a bit too much, I think. They would swarm towards the pellets as soon as they hit the water, which means that only a couple would reach the pleco. This is why you should use this at night when the plecos and other bottom feeders are most active.

7. Tetra Shrimp Wafers Plecos Food

tetra shrimp wafers plecos food

These wafers are orange in color, indicating that these pellets contain a lot of shrimp. This means that they contain a lot of proteins that will promote proper growth and improve your fish’s immunity. My plecos love this fish food and it made their colors quite vibrant. I did not know they can be this beautiful.

This fish food boasts of their flat disc shapes. I also noticed that they sink quickly to the bottom of the tank. This is an important feature because this is the ideal form for bottom-feeding fish like catfish, plecos, loaches, and similar species. These fish have mouths situated at the bottom of their heads, so they cannot eat floating food.

These pellets are also nutritionally balanced to promote proper growth and improved health of bottom-feeding fish. As I mentioned earlier, this food greatly improved the coloration and vibrancy of their details. My pleco used to look plain and dull but now, the brown coloration has gotten brighter and gave it a bit of a reddish tinge.

A nice thing about this product is that it does not disintegrate as quickly as other pleco wafers. These wafers can last for a couple of hours in the water and they will keep their shape. This prevents the water from getting too cloudy if the fish will not eat the pellets immediately.

Although these pellets do not cloud the water, it does make the water a bit hard, so you may need to put on a bit of water conditioner every other day. The water does not get immediately toxic. You will still need to pay attention to your water’s quality closely.

Pros
  • Contains a lot of protein from shrimp
  • Just the right size and shape for plecos to feed on
  • Nutritionally balanced for the proper growth and health of your fish
  • Does not cloud the water
Cons
  • Not for picky eaters
  • Somewhat made the water hard

I am fortunate enough that my pleco likes this fish food because the other fish would not even touch these. Even the snails and shrimp do not like these discs. This means one package can last quite a long time and your plecos will have plenty of food.

8. API Tropical PELLETS Sinking Fish Food

api tropical pellets sinking fish food

API is one of the companies that you can trust for proper fish care and these sinking pellets are not an exemption. This fish food is specifically formulated to be easier to digest so that your fish will get the most nutrients. After just a week or so of feeding my tank with this exclusively, the fish have gotten quite livelier and more active than before.

Because this fish food is easier to digest, that also means that the fish that eat this will not create that much waste. I have been feeding this product to my goldfish tank, and I was surprised at how little waste they have been making so far. This also means that the ammonia level in the tank will always be manageable.

Another nice thing about this product is its price. For the size of the packaging and the amount of product it contains, you are getting great value for your money. This brand is one of the more reasonably priced fish foods and one package can probably last a month or so of regular feeding.

Although these are sinking pellets, other fish and other creatures would swarm towards this fish food. All kinds of fish just love this fish food, fish like goldfish, catfish, plecos, shrimps, snails, and more. I just love seeing a mini feeding frenzy whenever I plop a couple of these discs into the water.

As much as I love this product, it does have a couple of issues. The biggest issue that I have is that these discs dissolve rather quickly and they cloud the water. It does not happen often as the fish would almost immediately devour it, but sometimes, a pellet would escape the mob, which is enough to make the water murky for a day or two.

Pros
  • Easier to digest and absorb the nutrients
  • Makes fish create less waste
  • Great value for money
  • Not just for bottom feeders but other fish as well
Cons
  • Disintegrates quickly and makes the water cloudy
  • Inaccurate product weight

My fish goes crazy for this fish food. However, since this does make the water cloudy, you must only do a light sprinkling. You will need to wait until every pellet is eaten before giving your fish more. Although this food is not exclusively for plecos, they do get quite a lot of benefits from this.

9. Aqueon Bottom Feeder Tablets

aqueon bottom feeder tablets

This sinking fish food does not cloud the water quite as much as other brands, especially when used properly. Each pellet is just the right size for a modest-sized pleco or catfish, so I just drop one pellet every feeding time. My pleco usually finishes one pellet in 5 to 10 minutes and I feed him twice a day.

This fish food contains so many vitamins and minerals that it could pass as nutritional supplements. It also has quite a lot of fish proteins that aid in the proper growth and development of fish.

Plecos grow quite fast on their own, but add these pellets into their diet and they will grow at a much faster rate. This is why I also plop a tablet into my breeder tank. The fry loves this and it makes them grow faster.

Aside from bolstering their overall health, these pellets also improve their appearance quite a bit. Plecos have beautiful scale patterns and most people do not notice it is because they have not been fed the right food.

This fish food improves the overall health of plecos, which reflects in how they look externally. My pleco now has a brighter brownish-red color instead of the drab brown it once was. Their markings are also now more visible.

These pellets are so dense that they readily sink to the bottom of the fish tank. I do not need to soak them in water, nor do I have to wait for them to sink. This means that the bottom feeders do not have to compete with the other fish in the community tank. However, it is also nice that some of my tetras and mollies love this fish food.

I am quite disappointed though that these pellets still manage to make the tank water cloudy. Even if you follow the instructions perfectly, the pellets still dissolve quickly and would make the water a bit murky. With a good filtration system, the water would clear up in fifteen to thirty minutes, but this should not have been an issue, to begin with.

Pros
  • Used properly, this food will not cloud the water
  • Contains nutrients and minerals necessary for an improved immune system
  • Contains nutrients that bring out the natural beauty of fish
  • Sinks readily and is the ideal shape for bottom-dwelling fish
Cons
  • Picky eaters might not like this food
  • Still cloud the water a bit

I was a bit disappointed at how this fish food still seems to make my water cloudy regardless of whether you follow the feeding instructions or not. However, the results do speak for themselves. My bottom feeders are more active and they look healthier than before. The cloudiness disappears after an hour or so, so it is tolerable.

10. Fluval Bug Bites Algae Crisps

fluval bug bites algae crisps

The best thing about this fish food is that it contains premium ingredients, quite unlike other brands that are full of extenders. This one has black soldier fly larvae, which Fluval breeds and cultivates in a controlled environment. It is one of the best sources of natural protein for fish and my plecos just love eating it.

In addition to protein, this fish food comes further fortified with additional vitamins and minerals that aid in the proper growth of fish. My pleco, which was usually sluggish and would just hide in a corner most of the time, is now significantly more active. He is also looking a whole lot better than he did before.

My pleco is not the only one that just loves eating this fish food. Whenever I drop a pellet or two into the tank, it causes almost all the fish to swarm towards it. Besides my pleco, it seems like my tetras and mollies also love eating this fish food, which can be a problem sometimes because the pleco will be competing for its food.

I also love that this does not cloud the water. Even if I put two or three wafers into the tank, the water stays clear. I do have to remove any leftovers, if there are any, immediately as they tend to grow mold when left in the water for too long.

I do have a couple of minor issues with the product. First, these pellets do not sink immediately. You will need to force them to make them go down. Second, in my opinion, these are too small for plecos, especially full-grown ones.

Pros
  • Contains highly nutritious black soldier fly larvae and other protein sources
  • Further fortified with additional vitamins and minerals
  • Causes a mini-feeding frenzy in aquariums
  • Does not cloud the water
Cons
  • Takes a while to sink
  • A bit too small for plecos

Aside from a couple of minor issues, I think this is the best repashy pleco food that you can give to your bottom feeders. Not only does it contain a lot of protein but it also seems to taste great. Almost all the fish in my community tank love it.

What to Look For When Buying a Pleco Food

best food for pleco growth

This might be the first time that you even thought of buying food just for your plecos. Most people think that plecos and other bottom feeders are perfectly fine just eating the algae off the sides of the tank.

However, they need proper nutrition like the other fish in the aquarium. Here are a couple of things to look for when shopping for the algae wafers for plecos:

Protein Content

Check the labels of the fish food you are thinking of buying. It should contain a decent amount of protein from natural sources. Plecos and other bottom feeders need a lot of protein because they usually do not get enough from just algae. Look for products that contain shrimp or fish meals as the main source of protein.

Size

Unlike other fish, bottom feeders have mouths situated under their heads, and they do not swallow their food whole most of the time. Choose fish food shaped into flat discs that are around a third of an inch in diameter. This will promote the natural feeding behavior of plecos, which will then make them want to eat more.

Does not Affect Water Quality

There are many pleco wafers out there that would start dissolving the second that they get wet. This can result in a cloudy tank. Good fish food should be able to get soft so that the fish can eat them easily but still be able to retain their shape and not disintegrate.

Sinks immediately

Plecos and other bottom feeders have mouths on the underside of their bodies, so they will find it almost impossible to eat floating food. The food you get them should be able to sink immediately so that bottom feeders can reach them easily.

Frequently Asked Questions

best food for plecos

What do Common Plecos Eat?

Most of the time, plecos would eat algae and the bark of driftwood. However, they would also eat, and further process, the waste from the other fish in the tank. They are also scavengers, so they will eat dead vegetation or fish that sunk to the bottom.

You can also feed them with homemade pleco food containing vegetables, like cucumbers, carrots, and lettuce leaves.

How Often do Plecos Eat?

Plecos do not eat that much. It is recommended that you only feed them just once every other day or two, or maybe once every day if you have a large fish.

Conclusion

You might have bought a pleco just for keeping your aquarium free of algae but that does not mean it does not need any other food. Give your hard-working pleco the nutrition it deserves and it will work even harder at keeping the tank spotless. In addition, if fed properly, plecos can look quite beautiful.

Now that you know how to shop for the best pleco food, you should buy one so you can provide your bottom feeders the nutrition they need and deserve.

best aquarium plants to reduce nitrates

Do you want to up your aquarium game? Then you can start by removing all those tacky plastic plants and replacing them with real aquatic ones. Having real plants in your aquarium is more beneficial as such can give your fish a natural environment to live in.

Moreover, the best aquarium plants for nitrates can help by promoting a natural nitrogen cycle in the tank. It means that the plants will be dealing with the nitrates and ammonia that come from fish waste, resulting in less fouling and fewer water changes.

For you to get suitable aquarium plants to reduce nitrates for your fish tank, consider the tips and suggestions indicated in this article. Let’s start with product reviews first.

Best Aquarium Plants to Reduce Nitrates Reviews

1. Aqua L’amour Amazon Frogbit

aqua l'amour amazon frogbit

One thing that impressed me about these plants is that they are already matured and established upon ordering. Each plant will have at least 2 leaves each. Meanwhile, their roots are around a foot in length. Although it is best to acclimate them, it is unnecessary to do any acclimation in a separate bucket. You can just throw them into your tank.

Another great thing about this plant is that it thrives without having to add extra nutrients to the water. This plant can survive in any aquarium setting. The only things they need are the nitrates that come from fish waste as nourishment. This means you do not have to add stress to your fish by adding nutrients into the water.

Unlike some aquatic plants, the Amazon Frogbits do not need CO2 constantly pumped into the water. It is one less tank accessory that you will need to get. Of course, these plants will appreciate the supplemental CO2, but they can do without it and still be fine.

Moreover, the plants that are the best nitrate remover for freshwater also do not need any fancy full-spectrum, high-wattage grow lights. Just your regular LED lamp will supply enough light for them to thrive. If the location of the aquarium gets several hours of natural indirect light, that would be enough to keep these plants happy.

The only problem with them is that they are somewhat sensitive to fluctuating temperatures. If these plants need to be shipped far, exposing them to the fluctuating ambient temperatures too much, they might arrive damaged, or worse DOA. Damaged plants upon arrival may be difficult to nurse back to health.

Pros
  • Each plant is mature with 2-3 leaves each
  • Does not need additional nutrients in the water
  • No need for CO2
  • Can thrive with just an LED grow light
  • Spreads fast
Cons
  • Delicate against temperature changes

If you are a beginner at taking care of aquatic plants, then these plants are ideal for you. They do not need any additional care aside from what you are already doing for your tank.

2. Aquarigram Leaf Amazon Frogbit

aquarigram leaf amazon frogbit

One thing I liked about this supplier of aquatic plants is that each order contains a lot of Frogbits recognized as among the best pond plants to reduce nitrates. You will be getting around ten or so plants with 2-3 leaves each. In a couple of weeks, these plants will cover the surface of your aquarium with very little maintenance to boot.

All of the Amazon Frogbits that I received had leaves that are, on average, the size of a quarter. In other words, they are already mature or well into the process of maturing. In just a couple of weeks, these plants will grow and spread quickly. If you have a small tank, then I think these plants will quickly cover the surface.

The plant provider takes good care of all the plants that they sell. The ones I received were packaged well. They come in a secure plastic container then wrapped in plenty of bubble wrap.

Aside from that, you know that the seller has years of experience with raising aquatic plants because there are no snails or any parasites that came with my Frogbits. However, I still put them in a quarantine tank for a week just to be on the safe side.

I also appreciated that Aquarigram put bonus plants with the items I ordered. I actually received two. I was glad that they added the bonus plants with my order as I would not have thought of getting them. Now, my following orders are for the bonus plants.

However, keep in mind that these Amazon Frogbits do not like long-distance travel, so if you are ordering from the opposite coast, expect that some plants may not make it. If some of the plants come with yellowed leaves, they can still recover.

Pros
  • You will be getting a lot of plants in a single order
  • Fully grown and well-established plants
  • Careful and secure packaging provided for the plants
  • Comes with bonus plants
  • The plants are resilient and capable of recovering quickly
Cons
  • The plants do not travel well

This supplier took good care of the plants from their end, like ensuring that there are no parasites or snails and that there is secure packaging for the plants during delivery. If the plants have to travel across the country to get to you, though, expect some of them to die or get damaged.

3. Wpmlady Aquarium Small Leaf Grass

wpmlady aquarium small leaf grass

One thing that I liked about this product is that you are getting 2 packs with each one containing a lot of seeds. This gave me quite a bit of confidence that these might grow. I had plenty of bad experiences with growing aquatic plants from seeds, so I generally steer away from those that do not provide enough seeds.

I also liked that you do not need to worry about where to get the seeds to sprout as you can use plain garden soil. I tried growing other ground-covering plants from seeds, and most of them are quite finicky when it comes to the soil used. I was successful in making these seeds grow using a regular potting mix, so I suspect anyone can do it as well.

Once the plants have grown and matured, they are pretty much low-maintenance. Unlike most high-tech aquatic plants, this ground cover plant does not require a CO2 system to keep the nitrate level for planted tanks pretty much within the normal range. The CO2 respired by the fish in the tank is enough to keep them green and healthy.

When you successfully make the seeds grow, they will provide a beautiful and dense ground cover that will almost look like a living carpet on the bottom of your tank. Once established, you do not need to do much with them. You can even take a portion of the cover and use it to start covering another tank.

The description says that these seeds will start sprouting in less than a week. The truth is, they won’t. It will take around two weeks before you can see anything green in the soil. This makes it not that suitable for beginners.

Pros
  • Each pack contains a lot of seeds
  • Can grow in regular soil
  • Does not need additional CO2 pump or nutrients
  • Effectively deals with the excess nitrates
  • Provides a beautiful ground cover for any tank
Cons
  • Takes a long time to sprout and mature

These plants are not recommended for beginners at growing aquatic plants. Anything that you need to grow from seeds can be a hit-or-miss situation. You will need a lot of time and patience to get these plants to grow and thrive.

4. Aquarigram Leaf Water Lettuce

aquarigram leaf water lettuce

The nice thing about getting plants from Aquarigram is that they provide you with more than enough to ensure that there will be a few extras in case some will not make it.

Regarding the Dwarf Water Lettuce, you will also receive several plants – at least 12 leaves in total. Mine arrived with a couple of the leaves starting to turn yellow, but the plants managed to bounce back and grow.

I also liked that the company provided a bonus mystery plant with every order. The one I got from them was quite a beautiful plant. I do not know what its name is as it was not provided, but I will search Aquarigram’s listings until I can find it.

The reason why I got high nitrate-absorbing plants is that they are great at filtering out the excess nitrates and other harmful chemicals in the water. It has been years since I started my aquarium hobby and I wished that I knew about water lettuce back then. The plants prevent the water from fouling so I no longer need to replace it quite as often.

Aquarigram provides a guarantee that your plants will arrive alive. However, if they did not make it, the company will send you replacements for free. I haven’t had any bad luck with my orders so far. Thanks to their careful packaging and labeling, all my plants arrived alive and healthy.

However, if you live in a place where the ambient temperature can reach a high of 100 degrees F or can get down to 35 degrees F or lower, the plants might not survive the trip. If you are not at home to receive the package, the extreme outside temperatures can and will damage the plants.

Pros
  • The package includes several plants with at least 12 leaves in total
  • Includes a mystery plant as a bonus
  • Helps remove the harmful chemicals in the tank
  • Packaged properly, ensuring that the plants will arrive alive
  • Provides a healthier environment for fish
Cons
  • Not recommended if you live somewhere with extreme temperatures

Dwarf Water Lettuce provides a good surface cover for your aquarium or koi pond. You can expect them to work great for beginners as they are quite hardy and they spread relatively quickly.

5. Aquarigram Leaf Water Spangles

aquarigram leaf water spangles

When the package arrives, you will be getting a couple of mature plants that have at least 50 leaves in total. This means you will be getting mature plants, not something that sprouted after just a couple of days. The plants I bought already had long roots. I needed to trim a couple of inches off so they could fit in my quarantine tank.

What I liked about water spangles is that they provide great hiding places for fish that you keep in a small pond. I have a small pond in my backyard, and it looks much better than if you don’t use any water plants at all.

My fish loved to hide under the water spangles in between the roots. It also gives the fry good hiding spots and significantly increases their survival rate.

These plants grow quite fast. I put mine in a quarantine tank for a week just to ensure there were not any snails or other parasites in the plants (and there weren’t any). While in there, the water spangles had a significant growth spurt. The leaves became more vibrant and they grew a little. There was also evidence of new growth.

These plants also did a great job keeping the nitrates level in my tank at a safe level. I do not keep any goldfish in my tank, just mollies and tetras, so the nitrate levels are not that high, to begin with. Still, the plants keep the water from getting too dirty, which means fewer water replacements.

Now, here is a word of warning about water spanglers. They are somewhat delicate. If you have an overhead water filter, it may not be a good idea to get these plants as the force of the cascading water is usually enough to rip off the leaves. It will then clog up the filter.

Pros
  • Mature and established plants
  • Provides excellent shade for fish in ponds
  • Grows and spreads steadily
  • Provides hiding places for fry
  • Help keep the nitrate balance in the water
Cons
  • These plants need more care than other floaters

Although the water spangler is not as hardy as frogbits, it is still a beginner-friendly water plant. You need to be careful about the small leaves as they might clog your filter.

6. Aquarigram Riccia Water Spangles

aquarigram riccia water spangles

If you have a tank of goldfish, then you are probably aware of just how dirty their water can get. Placing a cover of Riccia water spangles in the tank will not only make the aquarium look a whole lot better, but also take care of the nitrates that came from the fish waste. In the case of a goldfish tank, the plants will thrive in such an environment.

Another thing that I liked about these water spangles is that they are hardier compared to other floating water plants. When I received my package from Aquarigram, the plants looked well, considering that they traveled hundreds of miles. I then placed the plants in my quarantine tank and was pleased to see that there were no snails or parasites.

Just like other floating water plants, these provide a lot of shade for the fish. Sometimes, the LED tank light can be a bit too bright for the fish. The plants help by diffusing the light before it enters the water. The roots of the plants also dangle into the water. They serve as perfect hiding spots for the fry and shrimps if you have any.

The plants are also quite fond of nitrates, even more so than other aquatic plants. This means you no longer need to change the water quite as often. It is like having a natural filter. Some hobbyists do not even use filters. They just rely on the plants for filtration and aeration of the tank.

Now the problem with these plants is that they have small leaves that tend to get clogged in the water filter. You will need to put some sort of mesh screen over the water intake or place some sort of floating barrier on the surface to prevent the plants from getting close to the filter.

Pros
  • Likes nitrates
  • Hardy and low-maintenance
  • Provides good cover and food for little fish
  • Supplies plenty of oxygen
  • Spreads fast but the roots do not droop down as much
Cons
  • The small leaves of these plants may clog your filter

The Riccia water spangles are ideal for beginners at aquascaping. They are hardy and do not need a lot of maintenance. Aside from that, they act like a natural filter that keeps the water clean.

7. Aquarigram Leaf Velvet Water Spangles

aquarigram leaf velvet water spangles

If you populated your aquarium with small and medium-sized fish, the velvet water spangles will give them the ideal living environment. The leaves are quite large and provide plenty of dark areas where the smaller fish and their fry can hide away from the other bigger fish. The roots also provide the bigger fish with additional food.

Another benefit of water spangles, in general, is that they are quite durable and low-maintenance. The velvet water spangles delivered to me were a bit worse for wear due to them having traveled a long distance. However, after just a couple of days in my quarantine tank, the plants rebounded and got healthy again.

Unlike the other aquatic plants I owned, these are quite durable. You do not have to worry about the leaves falling off due to the cascading water from the filter of the nitrate limitation planted tank. Also, even if the fish were to eat a good length of their roots, these plants would not mind it as they will grow back in just a couple of days.

Speaking of propagation, if you place a couple of plants in a tank and you make sure that they get enough indirect light, the plants will spread and cover the entire surface of the water. You may end up with dozens of individual plants in under a year.

Now, the only thing to remember about the velvet water spangle is that they need a bit more illumination than most other aquatic plants. Because of their rather large leaves, they will need a lot of light for photosynthesis.

You do not need to position your aquarium where it gets direct sunlight. It is inadvisable to do so as it will cause algae to form. Just make sure that the aquarium is in a well-lit room that is fine.

Pros
  • Features larger leaves compared to other plants
  • Easy to care for
  • Hardy and durable
  • Provides a lot of shade and shelter for the fish
  • Easy to propagate
Cons
  • Will need more light compared to other aquatic plants

This is yet another aquatic plant that is ideal for beginners. However, it propagates quickly, so you will find yourself pruning and removing plants every month or so.

8. Aquarium Plants Hornwort Bunch

aquarium plants hornwort bunch

The best thing about planting hornworts in an aquarium is that they work well in filtering out nitrates. After I planted the hornwort in my aquarium, the nitrate level fell by more than 50% in just a week. It made my entire aquarium low-maintenance. I only needed to replace a bit of water every week, unlike in the past when it is half of the tank.

I was a bit worried when the plants came as a good portion of the roots were brown and rotten. The plants have shed a considerable number of leaves. However, after a week in my quarantine tank, the plants rebounded and looked perfectly healthy.

I was worried that these plants needed a lot of sunlight because of the number of leaves, but that was not the case at all. I keep my tank in a dimly lit part of the house. There is only a LED lamp to provide light. The hornwort still looked vibrantly green. The plants I have grown so fast that they reached the top of my tank in just two weeks.

Another thing that I liked about hornwort is that you can anchor them to the aggregate base of the aquarium, allowing them to float on top of the water or both. I still enjoy them even if I would have preferred them anchored at the bottom, as I like watching them sway in the water.

The seller grew all the plants they sell in outdoor ponds and they like to keep things organic so they do not use pesticides. This means that your batch of plants may have snails or other parasites in them.

The seller carefully inspects each batch before shipping, but snail eggs can be quite small and almost invisible. To be on the safe side, keep your plants in a quarantine tank or a large bucket for a week or so. This will allow you to spot if there are any stray snails.

Pros
  • Provides food and hiding places for small fish
  • Great at filtering out the nitrates and ammonia
  • Grows and spreads quickly
  • Does not need that much light to grow
  • Can be fixed at the bottom or allowed to float
Cons
  • May come with snails as the seller does not use any pesticides

The hornwort is considered an invasive species, so be careful when you dispose of them. However, that does not take away from this plant’s inherent beauty and its excellent nitrate filtering capabilities.

What to Look For When Buying a Aquarium Plants to Reduce Nitrates

best plants for nitrate removal

Are you a beginner when it comes to taking care of aquatic plants? Don’t worry. Unless the plant arrives at your home already dead, you would need to put some effort into killing them. However, some plants are more fragile than others.

Here are some things you should consider once you begin shopping for low nitrates in a planted tank.

Must Come from a Reputable Nursery

Don’t just get aquarium plants from anyone you meet online. They might be illegal plant poachers for all you know. There are even certain cases when people got into trouble just for possession of an endangered plant species.

Make sure that you are only buying from trusted plant nurseries. These are businesses that cultivate their stock of aquarium plants. They do not just scoop them up from their local ponds or lakes.

Must not Contain any Snails or Other Parasites

Here is a rule of thumb when it comes to buying aquarium plants. Always assume that they have snails. Even the most careful plant nursery can sometimes unintentionally ship a couple of snails along with the plants. The problem is that a couple of snails can turn into dozens in a short period.

The best thing to do is to put the plants inside a quarantine tank for a week or so. Not only will doing so acclimate the plants and allow them to recover their health, but it will also provide enough time for the snail eggs to hatch.

That way, you can pick off all the snails that you can see. If a week passes without any sign of parasites, then you can safely transfer the plants into your tank.

Must be Fully Mature

Never order plants that are just newly propagated. If you are looking for floating plants, make sure that each one has at least two fully-formed leaves and a good length of roots. If you want something that is anchored at the bottom of the tank, it should be at least half a foot long and has plenty of leaves.

Newly-propagated plants may not even survive the trip to your home from the nursery. You may only receive a container of brown rotting plant matter.

Should Come from Somewhere Close by

Ideally, you should buy from a local aquatic plant nursery if possible. It will ensure that the plants you get will reach your home alive.

However, if there are no reputable sellers in your area, you can shop for plants online. Just be sure that they are not too far away. Getting aquatic plants from across the country is almost a guarantee that the plants will have severe damages or become dead-on-arrival.

Choose a Hardy Species

If you are a beginner at taking care of aquatic plants, you must choose a plant species that is resilient and low-maintenance. There are not that many high-maintenance aquarium plants out there, so avoiding them should be easy.

Do your research to find beginner-friendly plants. Also, avoid the “high-tech” plants for now until you are a bit more Experienced and willing to spend on them.

Choose Plants Suitable for The Fish in your Aquarium

This will depend on the size and number of fish you are keeping in your tank. If you have small fishes, like mollies, tetras, and the like, you can pick whatever kind of plant you want.

These tiny fishes can flit through even the thickest of growths. On the other hand, if you have goldfish, get plants that grow quickly because they also eat plants.

Frequently Asked Questions

What Aquarium Plants Absorb the Most Nitrates?

Undoubtedly, the aquarium plant that absorbs the most nitrates is the duckweed. This is why most low-tech aquarium hobbyists use this plant to keep their non-filtered, non-oxygenated aquariums thriving. Other great nitrate-filtering plants include frogbits, marimo moss balls, water lettuce, water sprites, and others.

How to Reduce Nitrate in an Aquarium with Plants?

An easy and aesthetically pleasing way to reduce the number of nitrates in the water is to plant aquatic plants in the tank. Instead of the soil, aquatic plants get their nutrients, which happen to include nitrates, directly from the water.

Having aquarium plants can effectively cut the nitrate levels by more than half in just a week. It will continue going down as the plants grow more.

Conclusion

Nitrate levels are a constant problem that plagued traditional aquarium setups for years. If you want to keep an aquarium but prefer an easier way to keep the nitrate level in check, get the best aquarium plants to reduce nitrates.

There are many different species of water plants available right now. However, you can’t consider all of them as the best plants for nitrate removal. Choose the plants that are right for your experience level as an aquascaper as well as the number of fish that you are keeping in the tank.

best filter for 55 gallon aquarium

The best filter for a 55-gallon aquarium is one that can keep up with the biological load. If your tank is almost at the limit of its biological load, you will need a workhorse of a filter to get rid of all the waste that the fish will be creating.

On the other hand, you may not need a strong 55-gallon aquarium canister filter if you don’t have that many fish. You should concentrate more on water plants instead. You don’t necessarily need to have a larger capacity filter if you upgrade to a larger tank.

However, it is always good to err on the side of caution. Do not go overboard by getting the most expensive filter to control a very light biological load, too. It is just a waste of money.

So how do you figure out what is the best product for your aquarium? This article will teach you what to look for. You will also be getting a couple of recommendations for the best 55-gallon fish tank filter.

Best Filter for 55 Gallon Aquarium Reviews

1. Penn-Plax Cascade Aquarium Filter

penn-plax cascade aquarium filter

I was surprised at how small this HOB (hang-on-back) 55-gallon fish tank filter system was when I first saw it. I thought back then that this would not be enough to keep a large 55-gallon tank clean.

However, when I primed it and turned it on, I was surprised at how fast it moved the water. This filter is small enough that I can hide it easily behind the tank, but it has a powerful motor that can move the water efficiently.

I like using a HOB Fluval filter for a 55-gallon tank like this because it is easy to set up and maintain. Unlike submersible filters, you don’t need to submerge your arm inside the tank. Whenever I need to thoroughly clean the water filter, I just lift it off the side and place it on an old towel. My hands would not even touch the tank water at all.

Another thing I liked about this filter that is not present in some of the others that I have tested is the flow rate adjustment valve. Despite its size, this filter can move water at a rate of 200 gallons per hour. If you are keeping small fish, strong water flow quickly agitates them. This filter allows you to dial the flow rate down so it won’t stress the fish.

A nice little addition to this filtration system is the activated carbon filter. Not only did it turn the water crystal clear, but it also eliminated a lot of the fishy smell that usually emanates from aquariums. This filter cartridge essentially purified the water as it passed through, thus keeping all the fish in the tank happy and healthy.

Although I liked the activated carbon filter, I was not a huge fan of the other included cartridges. In my opinion, they were a bit too fine. They filter a lot of waste but they also clog up quickly, thus reducing the flow rate considerably. I had to replace the filter cartridges almost immediately because the water was not flowing fast enough.

Pros
  • Compact yet powerful
  • Easy to set up and maintain
  • Adjustable flow rate
  • The set includes an activated carbon filter to reduce discoloration
Cons
  • The filter cartridges are too fine

This is ideal for people who are looking for a quiet filter for a 55-gallon tank for their living spaces. You might even think that it is not working at times. What you will notice though, is that the water in your tank remains crystal clear even after months without complete water changes.

2. Polar 265GPH Aurora External Aquarium Filter

polar 265gph aurora external aquarium filter

Compared to the other 55-gallon fish tank filter cartridge, this one is relatively easier to set up and use. This set already came with all the fittings and filter media, I just needed to connect the hoses and the output pipe then place the filter mediate inside the canister. I spent just a little over half an hour from opening the box to getting the filter going.

Speaking of the output pipe, I noticed that I can set this top fin filter 55-gallon aquarium to work in many configurations. There’s an option to submerge the pipe underwater, creating a slight undercurrent. However, I prefer to put it above the water line to agitate the surface. It prevents the formation of a thin film on top of the water.

I liked the large filter trays this canister filter has. I was able to put even more filter media, making it more efficient at mechanical filtration. Each tray has plenty of space containing the activated carbon and bio-spheres. It allowed me to put several more filter sponges. It helped keep the water clear for weeks even without partial water changes.

One reason why it is among the best power filter for a 55-gallon tank is that it operates quietly. I am now using it on a tank in my living room. I struggle to hear the water pump working even during the early morning when everyone is asleep. At times, I even thought that it stopped working until I heard the slight bubbling sound of the water.

The only issue I had with this filter is that the output bar clamps do not work that well on rimmed tanks. The rim would not let the plastic clamp hold onto the side of the tank securely. I had to use a couple of shims to give the clamp an even surface to latch onto.

Pros
  • Fairly easy to set up and use
  • Multiple output bar configurations
  • Large filter trays
  • The pump is so quiet
Cons
  • The output bar is hard to attach to a rimmed tank

This is the best canister filter for a 55-gallon aquarium for people who want an external system but are not willing to shell out a lot of money for the more popular brands. However, even though this is relatively inexpensive, I have nothing but praises for it. It is durable and works efficiently.

3. NO.17 Submersible Aquarium Internal Filter

no.17 submersible aquarium internal filter

This is yet another small submersible filter that packs quite a lot of punch for its size. It has a water pump that is capable of 1000 liters per hour, ideal for aquariums from 55 gallons to around 100 gallons in size. However, I am also glad that I can adjust the flow rate because at maximum power, this filter disturbed the substrate of my aquarium.

Even if the filter for a 55-gallon freshwater tank can efficiently keep my aquarium clean, I would not like it if it is hard to clean. It is not the case for this one. I loved that I can tear it apart without tools. This allowed for thorough cleaning and maintenance. It is also easy to put back together. It took me less than 15 minutes to finish.

I also liked how this filter has a somewhat modular design. This system has two sets of sponge filters that are great for clearing up a cloudy tank. However, I found that for just maintaining the clarity of the water, it is enough to use one set of filters. This made it even more compact and easier to hide in the background while keeping the water clean.

Another nice thing about this filter is that I did not need to use a separate air stone to add oxygen into the water. I just attached the air hose onto the nub that is on the water outlet. This attachment is a lot better at aerating the water using an air stone because air is mixed with flowing water.

Now, I did say that this filter’s pump is powerful enough to circulate the water in a 55-gallon tank. However, the included filter media does not have enough surface area for beneficial bacteria to grow. Thankfully, I could fit a decent number of biospheres in the filter compartment after pulling out the included sponge media.

Pros
  • Compact design while still being quite powerful
  • Easy to disassemble for cleaning and maintenance
  • Adjustable filter stages
  • Can also add oxygen into the water
Cons
  • Small filter surface area for essential bacteria growth

This all-in-one internal filter is not just great for large tanks up to 55 gallons. It also has a compact design that makes it suitable for smaller tanks. I was surprised at how simple it was to use this filter and yet it does its job well. It is not bad for such a small filter.

4. Hygger Replaceable Sponge Filter

hygger replaceable sponge filter

This product is probably the best sponge filter for a 55-gallon tank because it does not need a water pump to work. I only need to use a small air pump, which I already have because I used an air stone. The air creates a vacuum inside the filter that makes it draw through the sponge and bio media and then out through the outlet pipe.

I have used this type of filter before but this is the first one with a bio-filter. There are two compartments that I filled with ceramic biofilter balls, making it eventually a home for beneficial bacteria that will filter ammonia and nitrates from the water. I have been using it for a couple of months and so far, there have been no ammonia or nitrate spikes.

Other than circulating the water in the tank, because it uses an air pump to work, this filter also oxygenates the water at the same time. This means you do not need to use a separate air stone. This filter does the job of two attachments, so it saves a lot of space and keeps the aquarium looking clean and uncluttered.

I also liked that the output pipe can extend quite a bit over the surface of the water. This allows me to extend the output high enough to effectively agitate the surface of the water or set it low to give the water a bit of a current.

However, what I did not like about this filter is that the suction cups that were supposed to hold the filter in place are not that strong. I had to replace the ones that came with the filters with larger and stronger ones just to keep the filter from floating in the tank.

Pros
  • Simple design does not need a water pump
  • The two-stage design effectively removes solid and chemical waste
  • Aerates and circulates the water
  • Adjustable output
  • Very quiet – The only noise you will hear is the slight sound of the bubbles
Cons
  • The suction cups are not strong enough to keep the filter in place

I would recommend this filter for aquarists who do not need to deal with a large biological load in their tank. This is great for planted tanks populated with small fish like tetras, mollies, and the like.

5. Aqueon QuietFlow LED PRO Power Filter

aqueon quietflow led pro power filter

I have been unlucky enough to go through a couple of water filters because their motors burned out after a brief power outage. This is not a problem with this water filter as it has a self-priming pump. Even after a couple of thunderstorms tripped the fuse box, this filter kept on chugging.

Another neat feature of this filter system is that you do not need to visually inspect the filters to find out when you need to replace them. This filter has an indicator LED that lights up when the filter senses that the flow rate has gotten significantly slower.

This compact HOB filter has 5 stages of filtration. This filter uses mechanical, chemical, biological, and two optional specialty Aqueon filter pads. I used this filter when I reset my 55-gallon tank, and it only took one day to get the water crystal clear. The filters also worked well at decreasing ammonia and nitrate levels and keeping them down.

I also liked how low-maintenance this filter is. When it comes to cleaning, it is easy to dismantle. I did not need any tools to disassemble the filter completely, even the impeller was easy to remove and clean. Once the parts are clean, they are as easy to put back together as they were to take them apart.

The only thing I did not like is how easy it was to burn out the water pump motor. Even running it dry for a short while is enough to cause the motor to burn. The first filter I had burned out was when the water level got a bit too low. This would have been better if it had an emergency cutoff switch to prevent this from happening.

Pros
  • The water pump is self-priming
  • Has an indicator light to signal when to replace the filter cartridges
  • Has 5 stages of filtration
  • Easy to dismantle and clean
Cons
  • The motor burns out immediately when it dries – It does not have a safety cutoff switch

If you keep a close eye on your tank and you don’t let too much water evaporate, this filter will treat you well. With proper use and maintenance, you can get a couple of years’ worth of use at least.

6. OASE Indoor Aquatics Biomaster Thermo

oase indoor aquatics biomaster thermo

The thing I liked the most about this water filtration system is that it has an all-in-one function. It is not just a water filter. This device also has a built-in heater, which is a must for fish sensitive to sudden temperature changes. I liked this feature especially since I live where the temperature usually drops to below freezing during the winter.

I was also quite happy with how this filter kept the water in my tank clean and free of harmful chemicals like ammonia and nitrates. The water goes through 4 filtration stages, namely pre-filtration, mechanical, chemical, and biological filters. The water coming out of the output pipe is not just clear but also free of chemical contaminants.

I have used other brands of external cartridge water filters and most of them were quite noisy. It is like you can hear the water gushing inside them. This product is quite the opposite. It is so quiet that I sometimes think that it is not working or got unplugged accidentally.

In addition, this cartridge filter has a water pump that can easily circulate the water in a 55-gallon tank, maybe even bigger. It is so powerful that I had to dial down the flow rate as it is disturbing the substrate too much.

I honestly do like this filter quite a bit. However, I do wish that the heater feature was a bit more consistent. There have been times when the water temperature would fluctuate by an entire degree or two. It caused quite a bit of stress on my fish. It is not enough to kill them, but you can see their agitation.

Pros
  • Has an integrated water heater
  • Provides 4-stage water filtration
  • Operates quietly
  • Has a powerful pump – It can circulate the water inside a 55-gallon tank easily
Cons
  • The heater is a bit inconsistent

If the built-in heater was a bit better at keeping a constant temperature, then I would have ranked this filter higher. It is still a great filter nonetheless. If you have a 55-gallon tank and you are keeping fish with high bio loads, like goldfish or big cichlids, then this is a great option.

7. JackSuper Ultra Quiet Fish Tank Filter

jacksuper ultra quiet fish tank filter

This aquarium filter has a novel little feature that I kind of like: interchangeable water outlet pipes. You can choose to use the wavemaker attachment, which is ideal for turtle ponds. There is also the aerator attachment, which you can connect with an air pump, oxygenating the water. There is also one to use the filter as a submersible pump.

For something so versatile, this aquarium filter is surprisingly easy to use. This was technically ready-to-use right out of the box. I just had to remove the plastic covering of the filter media and it was already good to go. It was also nice that it did not need any additional tools to disassemble and clean.

For something so powerful, I was surprised that it was not bigger. This aquarium filter has a water pump that is strong enough that it can circulate the water in a 55-gallon tank easily. However, it is also so compact that it was easy to hide behind aquarium decorations. This gave my aquarium a clean and uncluttered look.

Speaking of the water pump, I always used it for partial and full tank water replacements. I would run a hose from the device’s water outlet and into my kitchen sink for a mess-free water replacement.

Afterward, I would also use it as a submersible pump. I would place it inside a bucket of clean, treated water and run a hose into my tank. It helped quicken the entire process.

This would have been much better if I could adjust the water flow. As it is, the water pump is a bit too strong for my tank. It would sometimes blow my fish away. Thankfully, I was able to jerry-rig a flow limiter to slow down the water coming out of the outlet.

Pros
  • Swappable outlet attachments
  • Easy to install
  • Compact design
  • Moves a huge volume of water efficiently
Cons
  • Non-adjustable water flow

The switchable water outlets alone make this filter a worthy purchase. They add more versatility and uses to the water filter. In addition, it also helped a lot that this water filter is inexpensive while working as well as the more expensive brands.

8. Marineland Emperor 400 Pro Bio-Wheel Filter

marineland emperor 400 pro bio-wheel filter

Getting this aquarium filter was a no-brainer for me considering that this is one of the most popular HOB filters in the market. The biggest selling point of this device, for me, is its durability. I have lots of aquarist friends that have been using theirs for almost ten years, and they have not run into any serious problems whatsoever.

Aside from being durable, this aquarium filter also does a great job at chemical and biological filtration, thanks to the bio-wheel feature. The spinning ceramic water wheel allows beneficial bacteria to grow on their surface, and the rotating action constantly exposes them to air, which makes them work more efficiently.

I also like the long inlet pipe that can almost reach the bottom of my 55-gallon tank. This makes sure that all the water in the tank gets sucked into the filter. I have had some aquarium filters that had short inlet pipes and it resulted in the water at the bottom getting stagnant.

Even though this aquarium filter has a lot of moving parts, this is quite easy to clean and maintain. Even the bio-wheels are easy to remove and clean. No wonder this brand of aquarium filter can last so long.

Although I haven’t experienced it myself, several people said that their filters were a bit noisy. This might be due to not cleaning the bio-wheels properly, resulting in a slight squeaking sound as they turn.

Pros
  • Incredibly durable – It can work for a long time without breaking down
  • The rotating bio-wheel works as advertised
  • Low-maintenance and easy to clean
  • Comes with a long telescoping inlet pipe
Cons
  • The bio-wheel can get noisy when it is dirty

Except for some slight noise, which only happens when the filter gets too dirty, this is a great HOB filter system. If you keep fish that creates a large amount of waste, you need to get this filter. It will keep your tank ammonia-free if it is working properly.

9. FREESEA Internal Aquarium Power Filter

freesea internal aquarium power filter

This aquarium filter does more than just clean the water but also dissolved oxygen effectively. I liked this feature because it removes the need for a separate air stone for oxygenating the water, which gave my tank a nice uncluttered look. I also used this filter for my planted tank, which uses an external CO2 tank.

Another reason why I like using this aquarium filter is that it is easy to dismantle for thorough cleaning. The filter compartments simply snap in place. I can also easily remove them by hand. I was even able to pull out the impeller easily for cleaning.

Although this filter has such a powerful pump motor, it is still quiet. If not for the bubbles that come out of this water filter, I would have sworn that it was not working. I have a small aquarium set up in my bedroom with this filter, and I can only hear it humming when completely quiet. The white noise it produces is also quite relaxing.

As I mentioned earlier, I also use this water filter for a smaller tank. Typically, a filter with a pump as powerful as this one would not work with a tank smaller than 55 gallons. However, since this has an adjustable flow rate, I was able to dial the power down so that it will not cause the water to splash around in the tank.

The only issue I had with this aquarium filter is that it is quite tricky to clean due to it having so many parts. You have to be careful when you dismantle this filter for cleaning since there are a couple of small parts that you might misplace.

Pros
  • Aerates the water while filtering out waste
  • Easily disassembled even without using tools
  • Quiet operating motor
  • Has adjustable water flow
Cons
  • A bit difficult to clean due to its many parts

This is one little filter that can move a lot of water, which is why I am thankful that it has a flow adjustment valve. In addition, despite its compact size, it was able to clear the cloudy water in my tank after just a day of running.

10. SunSun Hw302 265GPH Pro Canister Filter

sunsun hw302 265gph pro canister filter

When I first got this filter kit, I thought I needed to buy the filter media separately. It is mostly my fault for not reading the label. When I opened the box that this device came in, I was surprised to see that it already contained everything that I needed, including the different kinds of filter media.

Just like all external canister filters, this one has a priming button for when you need to start the water pump again. Unlike other canister filters I have used before, this device primed right up after just a couple of pumps. In addition, even when the power goes out for a couple of moments, you do not need to prime the pump again to get it going.

I have a tank full of goldfish, Black Moors to be exact, and people who keep fish like this know that they create a ton of waste. I used a HOB filter on the tank once, and it did not take more than a couple of days before it was full. I opted for this canister filter for a 55-gallon tank because it is larger than a HOB, and I was glad I made the switch.

Also, unlike some of the other canister filters I tried so far, this has proven to be quite leak-proof. It has thick and beefy O-rings that prevent even the tiniest amount of water from getting through. Other filters I have owned usually sat in a small pool of water after a couple of months, but I haven’t had any problems like that with this product.

The only complaint I have with this kit is that the included rubber hoses for the inlet and outlet were stiff. I needed to soak the hoses in a basin of hot water for a couple of minutes to get them nice and loose. On the other hand, once the hoses cooled down, they held onto the hose connectors tightly.

Pros
  • The set comes with all the things that you need to get started
  • The pump primes easily and almost effortlessly
  • Can handle large volumes of biological waste
  • Has beefy O-rings and rubber seals
Cons
  • The included rubber hoses are a bit stiff

If you are having difficulty controlling the ammonia level in your tank, you should try this powerful external filter system. This not only removes almost all of the solid waste floating in the water, but it also uses beneficial bacteria to decompose the ammonia from fish waste. This, in turn, makes the water clean and clear.

What to Look For When Buying a Filter For 55 Gallon Aquarium

best canister filter for 55 gallon aquarium

Shopping for the most suitable filter for a 55-gallon aquarium can be tricky, especially if you are not aware of the qualities you need to look for. The following are just some of the qualities that a good water filter needs to have:

Mechanical and Biological Filtration

Mechanical filtration pertains to how effectively a filter removes solid matter from the water. The filter should be fine enough that it can remove most if not all the dirt and debris suspended in the water, but without hampering the pump’s ability to move the water.

Biological filtration, on the other hand, gets rid of hazardous chemicals, like ammonia, from the waste of the fish using beneficial bacteria. If the ammonia level gets too high, your fish will get sick and eventually die. To figure out if your filter has mechanical and biological filtration, check if there are ceramic balls in the filter compartment.

Low Maintenance

A good aquarium filter does not require frequent maintenance. There are lots of cheap aquarium filters that you need to clean every other day or so; otherwise, the water output will significantly lessen, and eventually, the pump motor will burn out.

If the time comes that you need to give the filter a thorough cleaning, it should be easy to dismantle so that it will be easier to clean.

Size

If you mounted your 55-gallon aquarium on a sturdy cabinet with plenty of storage space, an external canister filter system might be more to your speed. These filters have significantly more filter media, allowing them to clean the water in the aquarium more efficiently.

If you do not have the luxury of space, you should opt for a HOB (hang-on-back) or a submersible filter. These kinds of filters are small enough that you can hide them at the back of the tank or behind the plants or decorations inside it. Although they are not quite as efficient at filtering compared to canister filters, they still do a respectable job.

Frequently Asked Questions

What Size Filter For 55 Gallon Tank?

The rule of thumb when choosing a filter for your tank is that it needs to have a flow rate that is four times the volume of the tank. If you have a 55-gallon tank, you will need a filtration system that can move water at a rate of at least 220 gallons per hour.

How Often Do I Change My 55 Gallon Aquarium Filter?

Ideally, you will need to replace your filter media every three to four weeks. While the filter is already out of the water, take this time to scrub the inside of the filter housing using an old toothbrush and water that came from the tank. This will keep you from accidentally removing the beneficial bacteria from the filter.

Conclusion

If you are upgrading from a smaller aquarium, you will also need to upgrade your hardware, which includes getting the best aquarium filter for a 55-gallon tank. The filter you used for your smaller tank might not be able to keep up with the load that comes with the larger one.

A filter for a 55-gallon aquarium is the one that can handle all the biological waste that your fish can produce while circulating the water in the tank at the same time.

how to dispose of a dead fish
Every aquarium keeper has to know how to dispose of a dead fish. Failing to take proper measures may bring the same fate to the other fishes in the tank. Though keeping an aquarium is not as attentive as having a dog for a pet, it should never be neglected.

Regularly cleaning the fish tank reduces health risks for your underwater buddies. But however much care you’ve given, the inevitable happens. You will find a dead fish floating aimlessly in the aquarium.

Quickly Remove From the Tank

When you spot a floating dead fish in your tank, act swiftly. Fish it out and save other organisms from catching anything terrible. The longer a dead fish is in a tank, the more risk there is for its tank mates.

A fish is quick to decompose once it dies. It releases toxins that can cause other fish to fall ill. If a contagious illness is the reason for its death, there will be a high chance for the other fish in the tank to follow suit.

The safest way to take out the dead fish from the tank is by using a net. It is easy, and it reduces direct contact with the dead body. When you fish out the body, have a zip lock bag ready for easy transport of the body. If you are the type of fish keeper that gets emotional when your fish dies, it’s helpful to put your dead fish in a paper bag before putting it in a zip lock bag.

If you do not have a net, use your hands. Be sure to wear disposable gloves. Even if dead fish are generally not harmful to you, remember to wash your hands with soap afterward thoroughly. And remember to sanitize any equipment used to handle the dead body to rid of the germs and smell.

If you are not yet ready to dispose of the body, put it in the freezer to slow down its decomposition. Do this while you decide where to dispose of the body.

What to do with a dead fish? Flush or Bury?

what to do with a dead fish

When asked how to dispose of a dead fish or what to do with it, people will answer to flush it most of the time. It’s easy, quick, and simple. But it is not the most ethical method.

Why Should You Not Flush a Dead Fish?

Flushing a dead fish has various unfortunate consequences. Due to its harmful effect on nature, the American government has made it illegal in the states.

Flushing a dead fish may not seem harmful at first, but the effects will show down the pipe. Once you flush a dead fish, you expose wildlife creatures to diseases.

Burial Locations

The acceptable way is burial. There are many places where you can bury the body. There are also various ways to do it. If your fish is essential to you, give its burial some thought.

So you have decided to bury your scaly friend. Now, the question is, where? Legally, it should be on your own property. Look for a small area in your backyard where you can dig a hole big enough to fit your fish. It does not have to be 6 feet deep, just enough to cover the foul smell.

If you want to give your fish the best burial you can provide, get it a fish casket. There are fish caskets in the market. They are made eco-friendly and are suitable to hold decomposing fish underground.

Another resting place for your fish that you may consider is a pot. Turn the body into fertilizer. The decomposing body is not as useless as it lets on. It would provide your plant with the sustenance it needs to grow healthy.

Other Options

One safe way to dispose of the body is cremation. You can seek advice from a vet on how and where to cremate your dead fish. Or look for a pet crematorium near you.

Some will also throw the dead fish in the waste bin along with other garbage. This way of disposing of the dead fish is alright but make sure to wrap the body using a biodegradable material. You want to avoid the garbage collectors having direct contact with the dead fish. To be sure, you can label the wrapper just to inform the collector of what’s inside.

Clean the Tank

To make sure your fish do not meet their end sooner than you would like, clean their tank. Cleaning the tank removes whatever toxin is left in the tank by the dead fish. Change the water and check for any signs of parasites.

Check as well if any of the remaining fish has caught a disease. If one is sick, apply proper quarantine measures not to infect the other organisms. Place the sick fish in a separate bowl and ask a vet what to do next to make sure it does not die as well.

Conclusion

It is a sad situation to be in – to dispose of a pet you have cared for and fed. And since you have treated it well, why not treat it well all the way. A fish keeper hates to think of their fish dying, but it is natural. And when it comes to that unfortunate end, know how to dispose of a dead fish without compromising others’ safety.

Are your kids bugging you about getting their fish tank for their room? Depending on how old your children are, you can give them a smaller version of the one you are keeping in the living room.

If they like keeping fish and are quite disciplined, you can give them a bigger tank and a nicer setup. However, since you are reading this article, it is safe to assume you are looking for the best fish tank for kids.

Kids can learn quite a lot by keeping fish, so it can be a good idea to get them children fish tanks to play around with. This article will teach you how to choose the right fish tanks for kids’ rooms. You will learn everything, including how to pick the size, the materials, and suitable accessories.

You will also be getting a couple of product recommendations so you have an easier starting point.

Best Fish Tank for Kid Reviews

1. Koller Products AquaView 360 Aquarium

koller products aquaview 360 aquarium

The thing that I liked the most about this product is that instead of glass, the tank mainly uses acrylic for its construction. This is the reason why I am confident to set this up in my kid’s room. He is not destructive at all but knowing that this tank will not shatter if my son accidentally hits it is a good thing.

Another thing I liked about this product is that it is already a complete set. The tank already came with a cover, which has a built-in water filter/pump and programmable LED lights. I enjoy buying separate components for my fish tank, but I find that this set is better for my young son. I just needed to buy the things to put inside the tank.

Speaking of the built-in water filter, it worked well for the small tank. The water pump is strong enough to move the water properly. The filter uses Tetra filter cartridges that are easy to find and quite cheap. Even though the tank can only fit a few small fish, it is nice that the filter can keep the toxin levels down consistently.

This is also the perfect shape and size for a kid’s room. The tank itself is just a tad over ten inches in radius and it has a cylindrical shape. You will see that it is quite easy to find a suitable spot in any room to place this tank. Also, because of its cylindrical shape, you will get awesome viewing angles regardless of where you are standing.

The only issue that I have is the size. This tank is 2.5 gallons max, which means it can only accommodate very small fish. A betta might be able to survive in a 2.5-gallon tank but it won’t be happy. At the most, you probably can keep maybe 2 or 3 tetras in a tank this size, maybe even 5 if they are small enough.

Pros
  • Made from impact-resistant acrylic
  • Comes in a complete set
  • The included water filter is quite efficient and easy to maintain
  • Comes in a cylindrical shape, which provides optimal viewing angles regardless of where you look
Cons
  • A bit too small for most fish
  • The filter has no space for additional biofilters

This product is an ideal choice for kids because it already comes with all the accessories needed. This fish tank is also quite compact. It has a tank radius of just a hair over ten inches, so it does not take up that much space.

2. Aqueon LED MiniBow Aquarium Kit

aqueon led minibow aquarium kit

If your kid’s room is like mine, then you do not have that much room to place anything too large and bulky. If your son or daughter keeps begging you for an aquarium for their room, this 2.5-gallon kit should suffice. The base is roughly a foot wide and half a foot deep, so finding space for it will not be that hard.

Another nice thing about this tank is that it already comes with everything that you will ever need. Aside from the tank itself, it also comes with a small but efficient water pump and filter. There is also a small LED lamp. All these features are already built into the sleek cover.

Aside from the hardware, this set also comes with a starter pack of Aqueon products. Of course, the tank comes with a filter pad but it also has a pack of Aqueon water conditioners and a small packet of tropical flakes. This means you do not have to buy anything else to get the tank started. Even the fish food can last for at least a week.

Another reason why this is one of the best kid-friendly fish tanks is that it utilizes acrylic for its build. Unlike glass, acrylic will not shatter into a million pieces if you accidentally hit it with a hard object. No matter how careful you think your kid is with their stuff, accidents do happen.

Do keep in mind that this is a beginner/kid-size aquarium, which will severely limit the kinds of fish that you can place in it. Because the tank is just 2.5 gallons, the only fish that you can keep in them are limited to those that do not grow more than two inches long. In addition, you can only keep two or three fish at a time.

Pros
  • Available at the right size for a kid’s room
  • Has a built-in filter and light
  • Comes with Aqueon freebies
  • Easy to maintain
  • Made of shatter-proof acrylic
Cons
  • Can keep only limited kinds of fish due to the tank’s size

Although this tank has limits as it can only keep tiny fish, this should be more than enough for most kids and even for beginners at aquarium keeping. If you just want something small to keep your kids preoccupied and teach them the value of discipline, this tank is good enough.

3. GloFish Aquarium Kit

glofish aquarium kit

This aquarium is the perfect size for a kid’s room. The base is just 8.5” x 8.5”. It is small enough to fit on top of most kids’ cabinet drawers. You can also mount it on the wall using a pair of shelf brackets. You can easily find space anywhere for this compact aquarium in any space.

This aquarium kit already comes with all the accessories that you will need and it includes the Tetra Whisper filter system. I like this filter and I also use a similar one in my other tanks. This filter is so quiet that it will not disturb your kids while they are sleeping and yet it efficiently keeps the water clean and clear.

Aside from a filter, this kit also comes with a compact yet bright LED light system. This features 8 bright LED lamps and it has a blue light setting to make the fish and the décor glow in the dark.

With that said, you can best use it on certain breeds of bettas, neon tetras, and some other small fishes. When you turn off the lights in the room and turn on the blue light in the tank, the fish will light up.

Another nice thing about this tank that makes it the best for kids’ rooms is that it is acrylic. It does not matter if you are confident that your kids will not be throwing heavy toys at the fish.

Accidents happen and when they do, it is best to have an acrylic aquarium instead of one made of glass.

I have been happy overall with my experience so far but I do wish that the see-through cover was a bit sturdier. The clear cover looks great but it is so flimsy that the weight of the light alone is enough to make the cover bend.

I would have loved for the cover to be black but a bit more rigid than this one. It would have made the blue light effect even better in my opinion.

Pros
  • Has a sleek, compact, and beautiful design
  • Comes bundled with a Tetra Whisper filter kit
  • The LED lights include a blue light that makes fish glow fluorescent colors.
  • Made of shatter-proof acrylic
Cons
  • The cover is a bit flimsy
  • At just 1.5 gallons, you are limited to keeping just one or two small fish

Although this tank is extremely small, it should be enough to keep your kids busy until they are old enough to take care of a bigger tank. This tank is just the right size and already comes with all the accessories needed to keep fish healthy and happy.

4. Tetra Aquarium Fish Tank Kit

tetra aquarium fish tank kit

This might be too big for young children but it is just the right size for the older kids so you can teach them about responsibility. The tank uses scratch-resistant glass and it can also handle a bit of impact. Also, unlike acrylic, it is easier to maintain the clarity of this kind of tank.

You will be getting almost all the things that you will need to get started. This kit contains a 20-gallon tank, a water pump/filter system, a tank lid, LED lights, and even a couple of pieces of decorations. The only other things that you will need to put in the tank are the fish and substrate material.

Speaking of the filtration system, this kit comes with a highly-efficient Tetra Whisper filter system. This is a seemingly simple filter that has two filtering methods. First, the water comes mechanically filtered as it makes the water pass through a fine mesh filter pad.

In addition, aside from removing the solid particles, the filter pad also contains activated carbon to filter out the chemical impurities.

Unlike the other fish tanks for toddlers, this might be a bit too big for toddlers and pre-school kids, but elementary school-age kids will love this. This tank has a 20-gallon capacity, which is more than enough for a small school of tetras, or a goldfish or two.

If you are getting this tank for kids, they would probably not mind the cheesy artificial plant decorations that came with it. I would just throw the plastic plants into a drawer and forget about it forever. They look so fake. The other included accessories are fine, not overly great, but you could work with them for low-maintenance fish and plants.

Pros
  • Made using glass-resistant glass
  • Comes with everything you need to get started
  • The kit features a very efficient and quiet Tetra Whisper filter
  • Just the right size for kids and beginners
Cons
  • The included décor is a bit cheesy
  • Somewhat flimsy lid

This fish tank is great for older kids. The 20-gallon tank means they can keep more, or bigger fish, whatever they like. Having all the required accessories already included in the kit removes the hassles of buying them separately. You can already set up the tank and have it going the moment you take it out of the box.

5. FREESEA Betta Aquarium Fish Tank

freesea betta aquarium fish tank

This fish tank may not be big enough for experienced fish enthusiasts, aside maybe from those who primarily keep bettas. However, this is a good size for fish tanks for children’s bedrooms. The base is just 7.8” wide by 5.5” deep, so finding space for it in your kid’s room will not be that difficult.

An interesting feature of a tank this size is the sump at the back. Although a tank this small can benefit from a small HOB filter, FREESEA went above and beyond by giving it a makeshift sump. The set already comes with a biofilter sponge but there is still a bit more room for bio balls if you wish to use them.

Here is another nice feature. You can power the water pump via USB. This means you can use a power bank to keep the filter running when there is a power outage in your area. Also, this means that the filter pump does not use that much power to operate.

Speaking of the sump, a neat feature of it is that you can remove the divider to give your fish more swimming room. In case you want to replace the filter with a HOB, you can remove the plastic divider to give your fish more space.

This is what I did to the tank in my kid’s room and I only needed to make a few minor tweaks to the cover to make it work.

I did have a bit of a problem with the included filter pump, though. It was a bit too strong for the small fish in the tank. However, it was easy to fix. I just added a bit of mesh on the outlet hole to suppress the water flow enough. It would have been better if there was a way to control the pump manually.

Pros
  • Has a small footprint
  • Comes with a built-in sump at the back of the tank
  • Features a USB-powered filter
  • Comes with almost everything that you need to start
Cons
  • The water pump is a bit too strong
  • The included decorative plants are too small

Although you cannot keep anything larger than a betta in this tank, it would be more than enough to keep your little kids preoccupied and happy. The tank itself does not take up a lot of space, and it already comes with an efficient sump.

6. PENN-PLAX Rite-Bite Educational Betta Tank

penn-plax rite-bite educational betta tank

This is a complete toddler fish tank toy but it is not technically a toy. It is a true aquarium meant for keeping a betta fish. What is pleasantly surprising about this is that it is an adequately-sized tank. It also comes with a waste-absorbing gravel substrate.

Compared to the tanks that I used when I first started keeping betta fish, the one that came in this kit is impressive. The tank itself can contain more than a gallon of water. It comes with a cover. There is also a pre-measured feeding spoon and a light on the lid.

Another neat feature on the lid is the labeled daily feeding reminder. This is kind of like the pillboxes labeled with the day of the week. This will teach and remind your kids to feed the betta every day. The included feeding spoon is also a nice touch. It will prevent your kids from overfeeding the fish.

This “toy” is a great way to teach your kids the value of responsibility. This kit is a good way to teach your kids responsibility and how to take care of pets. If your young kids have been begging you to get a puppy, you can get them this kit in the meantime.

Although this is a kid’s toy technically, it should at least be a bit more durable than it is now. The daily food containers are quite fragile and difficult to use. The covers are a bit too tight. It is quite difficult to dump out the contents of the containers completely.

Pros
  • The kit contains a tank and waste-absorbing substrate
  • The tank features a built-in LED lamp
  • Comes with an easy feeding system that reminds kids to feed the fish
  • Provides a great way to teach kids about responsibility
Cons
  • The food compartments are a bit flimsy
  • The gravel does not work quite as well as I hoped

Do not expect that this would compare to a true betta setup but then again, the target audience includes toddlers and young kids. However, for something made of cheap plastic, I would have liked this even more if it was a bit cheaper.

7. Marina Betta Pals Kit

marina betta pals kit

This kit is not just great for kids. All beginners at fishkeeping regardless of their age will also like it. The tank is 5” wide by 9” long by 6” high, which is a good size for a kid’s room. The tank has such a small footprint that you can place it on a small shelf or top of a chest of drawers.

Another great thing about this kit is that you get everything that you will need to keep a betta fish. You will get a tank with a lid to prevent the betta from jumping out, about a pound of naturally colored purple gravel, and some decorative plants. There is also enough water conditioner for the first contents of the tank and a sample food packet.

One of the reasons why I consider this as one of the betta fish tanks for kids is that it is quite affordable. Since you will not be getting any electronics like filters and lights, you can keep the costs low. Don’t worry about not having a filter or water pump because betta fish can breathe air, so the water need not be clean all the time.

As mentioned earlier, aside from the water, you will be getting everything that your kids need to keep a betta fish. These include two plastic plant decorations. The “plants” have suction cup bases so they will not get uprooted when the betta rests on it, which it will constantly do.

Ideally, it is important to keep betta fish in a 5-gallon tank. Even though a betta can survive in a one-gallon tank, it does not mean that it would be happy. I am not also a big fan of non-acrylic plastic tanks. They are not quite as durable as I would like them to be.

Pros
  • A good starter kit for bettas
  • The kit contains everything you need to get started
  • Quite affordable
  • Comes with decorations
Cons
  • A bit too small for a betta
  • The tank makes use of flimsy plastic

This is not just a great betta tank for kids but it is also good for people who want to start keeping betta. The tank is a nice size for a betta. There is enough room for the fish to move but not so big that it would take up too much space.

8. Hygger Horizon LED Glass Starters Aquarium Kit

hygger horizon led glass starters aquarium kit

Some people might argue that this kit is a bit too nice to use as a fish tank for a 2-year-old child, and I would not disagree. The curved edges and the rocky backdrop seem too much for a practice tank for a young child. However, it is also ideal for kids because it is so mesmerizing to look at. My young son cannot stop staring at this tank in his room.

Speaking of the background, all tanks come with this backdrop already pre-installed. This 3D background is so much better than the usual poster taped at the back of the tank. In addition, you can plant grass seeds on the rocks to make the tank even more beautiful.

The water filter comes with a water cascade outlet attachment. This is nice because it makes the water look like it is coming from a waterfall. You can also control the water flow. You can set it to look like a waterfall or dial down the flow to make the water trickle down like a small stream.

This kit also has a very nice LED lamp. This LED lamp is not like your regular desk lamp. It comes with a wired controller that lets you change the colors of the light. You can make the light look like the morning, noon, or afternoon sun, and adjust the intensity. The only thing that could have made this even better is if it had a timer.

As much as I would have loved to give this aquarium kit a perfect score, it does have a couple of issues. One issue is that the filter is a bit too strong. I had to explain to my son what happened to one of his fish when it got sucked into the filter. I had to install a bit of mesh to cover the inlet to keep the other fish from suffering the same fate.

Pros
  • The tank boasts a beautiful and sleek design
  • Comes with a built-in 3D rocky cliff backdrop
  • The included filter and water pump feature a controllable water cascade
  • Quite a powerful LED lamp with several different light modes
Cons
  • The “overhang” is a bit too deep
  • Requires you to figure out a way to prevent small fish from getting sucked into the filter

This product is one of the nicer starter fish tanks for kids, but it will also work as a good beginner tank for anyone regardless of age. The curved glass tank and the plastic rock backdrop make this a good decoration piece for the living room. The size is just right for keeping a couple of tetras, or one betta, which are great starter fish for kids.

9. Penn-Plax Spongebob Betta Goldfish Fish Tank

penn-plax spongebob betta goldfish fish tank

If your kids are big fans of SpongeBob SquarePants, they might love this beginner betta fish tank. The base is just 10.5” x 6.5”, so finding space for it will not be difficult. Even if your kid’s room is a bit small, finding space for it will not be hard at all.

Even though this tank is quite simple, it still has a couple of convenient features. First, it comes with a clear lid with plenty of vents. This prevents the fish from jumping out and the outside debris from getting in. There is also a convenient drain hole at the bottom of the tank that will let you do water changes without disturbing the gravel too much.

This is a SpongeBob SquarePants-themed betta tank, so young kids would love this. This set comes with a colorful SpongeBob wallpaper for the background. It also has a pineapple topper. Any fan of the sponge that lives in a pineapple under the sea will certainly love having this tank regardless of their age.

The tank’s design is quite nice. It has a convex-shaped front and rounded corners, giving nice viewing angles. The back is flat so the wallpaper’s image will not get deformed. This will let you push it against the wall easily, thereby keeping it stable. The size is also just right for a single betta. He will have enough room to move around.

Now, here are the issues I have encountered with this tank. The biggest issue is that the external decorations disintegrate when they get even just a little bit wet. The topper is made of soft cardboard, which might have been better if it was plastic.

Pros
  • Just the right size for a single betta
  • Has small water drain at the bottom for easy water changes
  • Perfect for kids who love SpongeBob SquarePants
  • Has a curved front that provides good viewing angles
  • Features a flat back, making it possible for you to push it against a wall
Cons
  • The tank makes use of very flimsy plastic
  • Cardboard-based pineapple topper

It is a good thing that this tank is quite cheap because it does not last that long. If you are careful, it may last a couple of months but the backdrop and the pineapple topper will disintegrate after just a couple of weeks. If you are looking for a good tank for your young children to play with and learn, this is a good choice.

10. Oltraman Small Betta Fish Tank

oltraman small betta fish tank

It is a well-known fact that kids absolutely love playing with LEGO blocks, and a lot of adults are guilty of this as well. This betta tank kit features an adorable little plastic tank shaped like a square LEGO block. The lid even has four studs on top of it. Once set up properly, it will be a thing of beauty.

When you open the box where this kit comes in, you will be surprised that it already contains everything you need. Aside from the water and the fish itself, you will get a complete working fish tank.

The kit contains the 3/5-gallon tank, a pouch of gravel substrate, a couple of tank decorations, and a battery-powered LED light. You do not need to buy anything else.

Speaking of the LED lights, a small strip of multi-colored LEDs comes with this kit. The LED strip is USB-powered, which means if you have an old phone charger lying around the house, you can use that to power it. The light also has a remote control where you can change the colors of the lights and their intensity. You can also make it pulse.

Another neat thing about this tank is that it behaves just like real LEGO bricks. This means you can stack one tank on top of another. This is not necessarily a good option for kids’ rooms. However, if you are thinking of keeping a couple of bettas yourself, you can get a couple of these tanks and stack them together to save space.

Now, here are the issues that I have with this product. First, the tank is simply too small even for a betta fish. At first, it would seem like he loves the tank, but not having enough room to swim around will make the fish feel lethargic.

Pros
  • Compact size and cute LEGO design
  • Comes with gravel and decorations
  • Comes bundled with a remote-controlled LED light
  • Allows stacking of multiple tanks on top of the other
Cons
  • Much too small for bettas
  • The tank is easy to scratch and scuff

Although betta can survive in a tank that is this small, that does not necessarily mean that it will be happy. On the other hand, this will teach your kids how to take good care of their pets because they will need to change the water every other day. Also, there is no denying that this tank looks cute and will fit perfectly with any kid’s bedroom décor.

What to Look For When Buying a Fish Tank for Kids

best aquarium for toddlers

Here are a couple of things that you should consider when you are out shopping for the best aquarium for kids:

Size

This can get a bit tricky because you will need to find a balance between the available space in your kids’ room and how many fish your kids want to take care of. If your kids just want to take care of something simple, they can get a small tank and a betta fish.

Bettas do not need a huge tank as they can survive in a one-gallon tank. However, they will be much happier in a 5-gallon one.

Materials Used

Many of the best aquariums for toddlers use flimsy plastic for making the tanks. There is nothing wrong with that if you are not planning on keeping the fish for long. However, if you want your kids’ tank to last for as long as possible, go for the ones made of tough acrylic.

Accessories Included

If you are planning to give your kids a betta to take care of, you do not need to get a fancy water filter/aerator. Bettas are air breathers so the water need not be oxidized.

On the other hand, having a water filter will also mean that you will not need to change the water quite as often. Other accessories that you can get for your new tank include an LED light and a heater.

Price

Since you will be giving the tank to your young child, it makes sense to not spend hundreds of dollars on an aquarium. However, you should also not go out of your way to find the absolute cheapest one out there. Get a tank with a passable build and material quality. It should also fit your budget.

Frequently Asked Questions

starter fish tanks for kids

What age is Good for an Aquarium?

Once your toddler can start having simple chats with you, then he/she might be ready for an aquarium. On average, 18 months is a good age to start.

What is the Easiest fish Tank to Maintain?

Most normies would say that a goldfish tank, which is a classic, is easier to keep. However, goldfish eat a lot and as a result, they also poop a lot. This means that they are not exactly low-maintenance. If you want something easy to take care of, you should get a betta.

Conclusion

Your children are never too young to have the best fish tank for kids. You should start them as young as 18 months so they can learn more about responsibility.

There are hundreds of brands that you can choose from but only a couple are considered reliable. Since you have made it this far, it will be safe to say that you already have an idea of how to shop for a kids’ aquarium.

best filter for 30 gallon aquarium

Having the best filter for a 30-gallon aquarium means that you will not be worrying about a cloudy and dirty tank ever again. Although it is possible to keep an aquarium without a filter system, it can be quite difficult, especially if you do not have a lot of free time on your hands.

A good aquarium filter will make keeping fish a more relaxing and fulfilling hobby. Picking the 30-gallon filter system will take a bit of work. However, after you finish reading this article, finding the right filter for your aquarium will be a whole lot easier.

Best Filter for 30 Gallon Aquarium Reviews

1. Tetra Whisper IQ Power Filter

tetra whisper iq power filter

I have to say that this product is one of the quietest options for the good filter for a 29-gallon aquarium I have used so far. This system has a barrier that separates the motor from the filters to minimize noise and vibrations. I have a small tank set up in my bedroom, and I can hardly hear this aquarium filter from across the room.

If the motor is submerged in the water, the pump will start moving water as soon as it gets power. Unlike other HOB water filters that you need to prime first or else the motor will burn out, this one is something that you can just easily set up.

After that, you can plug it into a wall socket and forget about it for a time. Even if there was a power outage in your area, you can be sure that it will start itself without any problem.

Unlike other aquarium filters that only take out the solid waste floating in the water, these 30-gallon fish tank filters tend to do more. It allows the growth of beneficial nitrifying bacteria, thereby neutralizing harmful ammonia and nitrates in the water.

I have a tank containing a couple of goldfish, and the ammonia and nitrate levels are always either zero or close to it.

This is supposedly an incredible choice for a 29-gallon aquarium, but its motor is so powerful that I do not doubt that you can also use it for larger tanks, maybe up to 55 gallons. This had no trouble moving the water in my 30-gallon tank, and thankfully, it can reduce the flow rate as it is a bit too strong for my small tank.

The issue that I have with this aquarium filter is its rather massive size. The pictures of it you see on online retail sites do not give an accurate depiction of its size. I was surprised at how large the actual device was, and it took up quite a lot of the real estate on the side of my tank.

Pros
  • One of the quietest filters available (less than 40dB)
  • Has a self-priming water pump
  • Provides mechanical and biological filtering
  • Can move a lot of water but you can also tone it down
Cons
  • Quite bulky and takes up a lot of aquarium wall space

This product is ideal for use in aquariums placed in areas where silence is very much needed, like the living room or the bedroom. It is so quiet that I sometimes forget that it is already working. However, even though it is one of the quietest filters for 30-gallon tanks, it still works tirelessly to keep my aquarium constantly clean.

2. NICREW Aquarium Internal Filter

nicrew aquarium internal filter

I was looking for a relatively inexpensive 30-gallon sponge filter, nothing too fancy, so I got this filter. I was surprised when I saw the attachments that came with it as they added a lot of versatility to the filter. I particularly like the spray bar because of how well it agitates the surface of the water to prevent protein film from forming.

This device also comes equipped with a water flow regulator. I am currently using mine on a small shrimp tank, and at full power, the rapid water flow stressed the tiny shrimp so much that they could not breed. However, I lowered the water flow to keep the water under the surface relatively still and now, my shrimps are all vibrant and happy.

This filter set already came with filter cartridges: one sponge filter and one activated carbon packet. I liked using the activated carbon because it helped keep the water clean and pH-balanced.

Most of all, it absorbed the smell coming from the water. It helped a lot in keeping my living room from smelling fishy, especially during days before you need to do a complete water change.

Speaking of water changes, when it comes time to change the water, you will discover that cleaning this filter is easy. Although there are many parts to watch over, disassembling does not require any tools. Also, putting it back together is as easy as taking it apart. I think it only took me around 30 or so minutes to clean it completely.

The only thing that I did not like about this device is that the instructions were written in broken English, which kind of makes them hard to understand. Thankfully, the instructions also come with illustrations, so I was still able to figure out what to do.

Pros
  • Very versatile – You can set it up for different uses
  • Has an adjustable flow regulator
  • Comes with an activated carbon filter that absorbs odors
  • Easy to disassemble for thorough cleaning
Cons
  • The instructions are written in broken English

This is a nice budget-friendly and low-profile aquarium filter. Although it is a bit noisy, it is not quite as bad as other water filters that I have tried. This is far from being the worst. This filter is also great for beginner aquarists who want quality for a reasonable price.

3. Zilla Aquatic Reptile Internal Filter

zilla aquatic reptile internal filter

I have to keep a couple of red-eared turtles, and those of you who have kept one know that they are quite persistent climbers. This is why I am happy to say that this internal filter comes with a tiny plastic grate that prevents little critters from climbing into the filter and getting stuck. These little details sometimes make or break a product.

I have a shallow tank setup for my turtles so other HOB filters fit awkwardly on it. However, this is one of the most suitable filters for 29, 30-gallon freshwater tanks because it has suction cups at the back, ensuring that the filter stays flat on the side of the tank.

The suction cups are quite strong. This means that I do not have to worry about my turtles knocking this off. I sometimes have a hard time removing them for cleaning.

One of the unenjoyable things about keeping turtles is that they create a lot of waste. They also smell funky. Thankfully, this submersible filter uses cartridges that contain activated carbon.

This means that aside from trapping solid waste and clearing the water, it also deodorizes it. This is a good thing, especially if you don’t like your home smelling like a swamp.

Aside from the water trickling out of the filter, you will hardly hear any sound that would indicate that this device is working. The motor, although powerful, runs silently and with hardly any vibrations. I have my tank set up in the living room and I can hardly hear it running in the background.

The only issue I had with this filter is that it was a bit difficult to dismantle at first. I had a hard time pulling the internals out of the housing, I thought that it would break if I forced it any further. I was so happy when it eventually came apart without anything snapping off.

Pros
  • Comes with a protective grate
  • Easy drop-down or HOB installation
  • Uses an activated carbon filter to eliminate the smell coming from the tank
  • Runs quietly – You will only hear the running water
Cons
  • Hard to disassemble at first

I have tried a lot of filters for my turtle’s habitat and this is probably one of my favorites. It can move a lot of water and the included filter worked well in keeping my turtle habitat clean, which is not a simple feat.

4. AQQA Aquarium Fluidized Moving Bed Filter

aqqa aquarium fluidized moving bed filter

Although this product is a somewhat budget version of a fluidized bioreactor, I was impressed at how efficient it is at keeping nitrates and ammonia levels down. The moving ceramic pellets mimic the action of pebbles and rocks in rivers. They also provide better chemical filtration compared to just using bio balls.

I am using this device as a backup filtration system. I mainly got it because it helps the nitrification cycle. It is a good thing that this device has a compact design because I would like my tank to be uncluttered as much as possible. This device is almost the same size as a tumbler, so it is easy to hide behind aquarium plants and/or driftwood.

My aquarium contains a couple of cichlids, which is why I have another HOB filter in addition to this one. However, if my tank did not have such a big bio load, like a tank with shrimp or small fish, I believe that using this filter alone would be fine.

In addition to the moving bed filter, this also has a sponge filter at the bottom. This is beneficial as it works in catching the bigger waste particles in the water.

Also, aside from filtering the water in the tank, this device has a built-in air stone. The air stone produces thousands of fine bubbles that allow more oxygen to get dissolved in the water. The finer bubbles evenly push the bio media and make them tumble in the reactor.

Although this device works well as a bioreactor and helps keep the nitrates and ammonia levels down, it is not that great as the main filter for an aquarium. This is why I also have another HOB filter that acts as the main filtration system of my aquarium. This bioreactor is just there to keep the water safe for the fish.

Pros
  • Provides a much better environment for cultivating nitrifying bacteria
  • Small and compact design
  • Comes with a filter sponge for mechanical filtration
  • Has a built-in air stone for improved oxygen dissolving
Cons
  • Not that great at keeping the water clean

Although this filter is not as good at cleaning the water compared to powered filters, it provides immense help when it comes to keeping the ammonia and nitrate levels in my aquarium at zero. If you are having trouble with the nitrate cycling in your tank, you need to check this biofilter out.

5. Fluval U Series Underwater Filter

fluval u series underwater filter

For such a compact submerged aquarium filter, it did a great job at cleaning the water of my fish tank. The fish I keep do not make that much waste, but they still produce a significant amount.
This filter has 3-stage filtration – mechanical, chemical, and biological filtration. I love the biological filtration stage as it helps immensely in keeping the ammonia level in check.

This Fluval 30-gallon filter also has three options for water output – top, middle, and bottom. The bottom water output is the one I prefer to use because it stirs up the water at the bottom of the tank and makes it circulate better. It is a shame, though, that you cannot use multiple outlets at one time.

This canister filter for a 30-gallon planted tank can also be installed vertically and horizontally. Mine is installed vertically and stuck on the side of the tank, but I have seen other people using this lying down on the bottom of their setups.

I also think that using the middle output while the filter is installed horizontally would be a great way to create a waterfall effect in turtle habitats.

Another small detail, but useful nonetheless, is the easy-open lid set at the top of the filter. This provides convenient access to the filter cartridges and the inner workings of the filter for easy cleaning.

The only issue that I have with this is that you cannot use other brands of biological filter media other than those of Fluval’s. The space inside the filter housing is too small to get enough bio-balls inside to make a significant effect.

I am not saying that the media offered by Fluval is not good. However, it would have been nice to be able to use other brands if Fluval’s are not available.

Pros
  • Comes with a 3-stage filtration
  • Has three output modes to choose from
  • Allows installation vertically or horizontally
  • Has a convenient lid for easy access to the filters and cleaning
Cons
  • Does not have enough space for biological filter media other than that of Fluval’s

Although you can only use proprietary filter cartridges, this device does its job well. The additional versatility of the output options was also a nice touch. I am using this filter on a fish tank but I am sure that it will also work well for turtles and other aquatic habitats.

6. Aqua-TECH Power Filter

aqua-tech power filter

One of the biggest reasons why I got this filter is that I know a lot of other aquarium owners who have been using their Aqua-Tech HOB filter for at least a decade, and they are still going strong. This is the kind of durability that you can confidently invest your money in, and so far, it is worth every penny.

Aside from mechanical and chemical filtration, this sponge filter for 30-gallon tanks also contains bi0 foam, which is a very porous synthetic foam material. This allows the growth of nitrifying bacteria and plenty of them. I have been using the product for a couple of months and so far, I have not seen a huge spike in nitrate and ammonia levels.

The included mechanical and chemical filter cartridges also do a great job of keeping the water clean. I keep a couple of goldfish in a 30-gallon tank and experienced aquarium keepers know how much waste these fish make.

With that in mind, you will need a heavy-duty filter to deal with them. Aside from the mechanical filter, it also uses an activated carbon cartridge. This removes the discoloration and smells from the water.

I also like how quiet this aquarium filter works. I have my tank set up in my home office, and aside from the bubbling water, I could not hear any noticeable noises from my water filter. This is thanks in large part to the decoupled motor and dampeners that work together to limit the amount of sound this device produces to below 40 decibels.

The only issue I have with this filter is that the newer ones, like the one I have, no longer have removable motors like they used to have. My aquarium keeper friends told me that they can easily remove and replace the water pump motor without replacing the whole thing.

Pros
  • Highly durable and long-lasting
  • Effectively propagates nitrifying bacteria
  • Excellent mechanical filtration
  • Has a decoupled motor and dampeners to reduce noise
Cons
  • Does not have a replaceable motor anymore

Although the filter no longer has a replaceable motor, which is a shame, this is still a great filter to use even on a tank with a heavy biological load. If you have a turtle or goldfish tank, this can handle the load quite well.

7. JackSuper Aquarium Turtle Waterfall Filter

jacksuper aquarium turtle waterfall filter

The most important quality that you need to look for in a water filter for a turtle tank is the ability to move a lot of water. Turtles create a lot of solid waste, so you should get a water filter that has a pump strong enough to circulate the water in the tank constantly.

I have been using this water filter for a couple of months. Although I would have to say that it is not perfect (the far corners of the tank are still a bit dirty), this was able to keep the tank relatively clean.

Aside from the sound of the water trickling out of the mini waterfall outlet, you will not be hearing anything to indicate that this filter is working. For something small and powerful, the motor hardly makes noise. If you set it up in your private Zen garden, it will not distract you from your daily meditations, the quietest filter for a 30-gallon tank.

I have this water filter set up in a small 1-gallon betta tank, and the waterfall outlet does not agitate the water surface enough that it would stress the fish. However, the waterfall still stirs up the water enough to prevent a surface film from forming. It also oxygenates the water efficiently.

Another thing that I liked about this filter is that it pulls apart easily for thorough cleaning. As mentioned earlier, turtles create a lot of waste, and they will all end up inside the filter.

I am glad that I can easily take this filter apart, and not just remove the filter media. I could thoroughly clean the filter so that it would be able to work well for many years to come.

I only wished that the manufacturer hired a proper English translator for the instruction manual. I have used a couple of other similar products so setting it up was not much of a challenge, but I would be willing to bet that beginners would have a hard time. One big typo is that you can run the filter for 2-4 hours, and not the intended 24 hours.

Pros
  • Moves a lot of water, which is ideal for turtle ponds
  • Whisper-quiet operation
  • Gentle water outlet will not stress small fish
  • Disassembles completely for easier cleaning
Cons
  • Quite hard to understand instructions

Beginners might have a hard time using this shallow aquarium water filter because the instruction booklet has poor translations. However, once you get the gist of how to set up this filter, it will work hard to keep the water in the tank clean. My turtles are liking it so far, so there is no reason why it would not work for you.

8. Marineland Penguin PRO Power Filter

marineland penguin pro power filter

The best feature of this water filter is the bio-wheel. This rotating plastic water wheel provides lots of surface area for nitrifying bacteria to grow, and they get more efficient at neutralizing ammonia and nitrates when exposed to air. With this filter on my aquarium, the ammonia and nitrate levels have constantly been zero.

Out of the box, this kit already came with an activated carbon filter cartridge. I previously had trouble with the water in my fish tank constantly getting cloudy even after complete water changes. The activated carbon filter cartridge helped immensely by turning the water crystal clear. It also removed the fishy smell from the water.

I use this water filter on a 30-gallon tank with a dozen or so mollies, and they are easily agitated. This is why I liked how you can easily tune down the flow rate of the water by simply turning a plastic knob. Since this filter came with a rather strong pump, I had to decrease the flow rate by almost half to keep my fish from getting too stressed.

Aside from the included bio-wheel, you can also add more biological filtration using the included media basket. I used a couple of bio balls for additional nitrifying capabilities and it worked wonderfully. The bio-wheel was already working great for me, and I just added more media for good measure.

I only hoped that the included sponge filter was not so fine because it clogged up easily. When I used it to replace a broken filter, it took no more than two days before the filter clogged up and caused the water to backflow.

Pros
  • Utilizes bio-wheel technology for efficient biological filtration
  • Comes with an activated carbon filter for effective chemical filtration
  • Adjustable water flow rate
  • Features an additional media basket for additional filtration
Cons
  • The included filter cartridge clogs up easily

After replacing the included mechanical filter with something a bit coarser, this filter will work as intended. It might have been a mistake on my part to use this on an already working tank, but this would work nicely if you use this on a newly started or restarted tank.

9. Fluval 07 Series Performance Canister Filter

fluval 07 series performance canister filter

I liked the pull mechanism used for priming the pump of this canister filter. It is much easier to use than the conventional push primer. I also found that it was much easier to get the pump going if you raise the outlet tube just above the water line before priming. This cartridge filter is easy to use straight out of the box.

Once assembled, which is a bit of a challenge because of the number of parts, maintaining and cleaning this cartridge filter is easy. I loved that I can remove the inlet and outlet hoses from the lid at the same time using just one latch.

The filter compartments are also easy to remove from the housing, thanks to built-in handles. This is significantly less messy to clean compared to the other filters I have used.

Another improvement that this Fluval filter had over its predecessor, which is still one of the best canister filters for 30-gallon tanks, is that it is more compact but still has excellent suction.

It took up less space in the cabinet under my tank, which is always great because there is room for other stuff. However, this filter is not completely silent. It produced a slightly muted humming noise.

Unless you already have other brand filters in mind that you want to use, this kit already comes with everything to get you started. Straight out of the box, you will be getting a lot of Fluval bio-foam filter media and an activated carbon cartridge.

Although I was impressed by the amount of filter media included, I added ceramic bio pellets in the included media basket for additional filtration and improved nitrate cycling.

I do not have any serious complaints about this device. However, I do wish that mounting the inlet and outlet tubes to the tank was much easier than it is now. The tubes only have one flimsy suction cup each to hold them in place inside the tank.

When the pump is turned on at medium-high to high settings, the suction cups tend to peel off the tank.

Pros
  • Much easier to prime compared to other cartridge filters
  • Easy to disassemble for cleaning
  • Great suction and water circulation
  • Comes with all the media needed to get started
Cons
  • The inlet and outlet fixtures are hard to install

This is a great update to an already very impressive canister filter. The filter motor is still the same reliable model. However, the changes made on the filter media tray, cover latches, and other conveniences made this filter even better than the previous iteration.

10. Aqueon QuietFlow LED PRO Power Filter

aqueon quietflow led pro power filter

This is ideal for beginners at aquarium-keeping because it is easy to operate. One of the reasons I recommend this is that it is self-priming.

Unlike other HOB filters that you need to prime by pouring water into the pump first, this one is self-priming. This means that even if the power trips in your home, the water pump will not burn out due to it running dry.

Another nice feature of this water filter is that it monitors the water level inside the filter, and would flash a LED light to signal that you need to change the filters. I liked this feature a lot because it means I do not need to check the filters every day. It will tell me when it needs filter media replacement.

As the name suggests, this aquarium filter is quiet. The motor is uncoupled from the impeller. It also has dampers to minimize the noise it makes. However, when I first used this filter, the impeller was quite noisy. Fortunately, it just needed a bit of non-toxic silicone spray to get it going again.

This tiny water filter is surprisingly powerful. Although this is rated for a 30-gallon tank, I believe that it can handle a bigger capacity. I needed to place a sponge pre-filter over the inlet pipe because my small shrimp would get stuck on it. I had to dial the power down quite a bit to get it just the way I wanted.

As mentioned earlier, the impeller was quite noisy when I first got it. I belong in an online group of aquarium keepers and a couple of my buddies there use the same filter. They all said that after a year, the impeller will start getting noisy, and lubricating it would only minimize the noise, but not totally.

Pros
  • No priming is necessary – It will start running when submerged
  • Monitors water levels and flashes in case of clogging
  • Features decouple and dampened motor to minimize noise
  • Provides good suction – Sometimes, it is too strong
Cons
  • The impeller starts to get noisy after a while

Although the water pump tends to get a bit noisy after a year or two, it still provides a better result compared to other brands. I recommend this aquarium filter for beginners at keeping aquariums as it provides all the filtration needs of simple setups.

What to Look For When Buying a Filter for 30 Gallon Aquarium

quietest filter for 30 gallon tanks

Buying aquarium filters can be quite difficult, especially if this is your first tank. To help you make the right decision, here are some of the things that you should keep an eye out for:

Water Pump Power

If you have a 30-gallon tank, you will need a pump that’s strong enough to move all the water, especially if you keep quite strong fish. On the other hand, if you are keeping small and delicate fish, it is best to get a filter with an adjustable flow rate. That way, you can slow down the flow to prevent the fish from getting too stressed.

Filtration

A good aquarium filter does not just trap the solid waste suspended in the water but should also filter out other harmful substances. Ideally, you should get a filter that can do mechanical, chemical, and biological filtration.

You need mechanical filtration to get rid of the solid waste. Chemical, on the other hand, is to get rid of discoloration and smell while biological filtration provides a close-to-natural environment for the fish.

Durability

It does not matter if you buy a cheap aquarium filter, if it breaks easily and you end up buying a new one every couple of months, then you are just wasting money. It is best to buy an aquarium filter that can last for at least a couple of years. I have seen top-brand filters that are more than a dozen years old and are still working like new.

Price

Of course, the price of the filter should be based on the size of your budget, and how much you are willing to compromise when it comes to maintenance and efficiency. For instance, you can get a serviceable HOB filter for under $20.

However, the catch is that you will be cleaning it at least once a week. On the other hand, if you choose a more expensive external cartridge filter, you may need to clean it maybe once a month or so.

Frequently Asked Questions

What Size of Filter do I Need for a 30-Gallon Fish Tank?

Typically, you will find the filter size for a 30-gallon tank on the label of the device. If that information is not available, you should get a pump and filter setup that is capable of at least 120 gph, or four times the tank’s volume per hour.

Can you Use a 30-Gallon Filter on a 20-Gallon Tank?

Yes, you can. However, if the flow rate is too strong for your fish, then you should dial it down.

Conclusion

Although it is possible to keep an aquarium without using a water filter, it will be quite a tedious exercise. You will also be limiting yourself to a handful of fish that you can take care of and the size of the tank you can use.

Using the best filter for a 30-gallon aquarium will ensure that the water will always be clean and your fish will be healthy and happy in their home.

how to lower ph level in fish tank

An important part of the maintenance of your fish tank is familiarizing its water chemistry. If you think that you can just easily put whatever fish you like and add some decorations and accessories to the tank, think again. You need to consider the pH level of the water in the tank that it should have the accurate level to let the fish survive. The pH level can change every day; hence you need to monitor and adjust it according to your fish needs.

If the pH level is very high, you will need to know how to lower pH level in the fish tank. In a regular aquarium, the ideal pH level should be around 6.5 to 8.0 for the fish to live. However, there are other fish who likes low pH level while others want high pH level. In other words, there is no normal pH as it depends on the fish and where they originated, which determines their pH level preference.

What Causes pH to Rise in Aquarium

As I’ve said earlier, the pH level of your aquarium is not fixed. It may change any minute as several factors might cause it to decline or rise. In fact, natural biological processes are happening in the aquarium that causes the pH level to rise. For example, when plants in the aquarium absorb carbon dioxide and nitrates, which cause the pH level to decline, it will raise the overall pH level of the water. Also, those dissolve calcium-rich rocks and gravel can also help increase the pH level.

However, all the above-mentioned are natural causes that will help raise the water’s pH level. However, should you find yourself in a situation where the pH level is low, there are things that you can do to make it rise, such as changing the water in your aquarium. This method is the most effective way to raise the pH level if you need to. Another way is to add rocks or substrate in the aquarium can also help in raising the water’s pH level.

Adding baking soda can also raise the pH level in the water, but this should be done in moderation because too much of it might kill the fish in your aquarium. Adding shells and putting them in the aquarium can also contribute to raising the pH level of the water, even though you can also add chemicals that are commercially available that helps in raising the pH level of your aquarium water.

How to Reduce pH in Aquarium

what causes ph to rise in aquarium

On the other hand, if you find out that the water in your aquarium has a high pH level, there are some ways to reduce it. One of which is to add natural driftwood in the aquarium because it releases tannins that help lower the pH level of water. Meanwhile, you can also add peat moss or peat pellets to your filter to effectively lower the pH level of the water.

You can also add chemicals that are made to help lower the pH level of the water. There are many products available in the market that helps do the job, and buying one of them can help solve your problem.

Driftwood

Yes, driftwood is an effective way to lower your pH level but if you know what you are doing. Naturally, driftwood is an organic matter which means once it is submerged into the water, it can produce tannic acid that effectively reduces the pH level. However, the effectiveness of the driftwood in changing the pH level will all depend on the water hardness. If your water hardness is high, the chance is that it will resist the changes that the driftwood provides in lowering the pH level. Before putting driftwood in your aquarium, you will need to make sure that the water hardness is lower enough for the driftwood to be effective.

Peat Moss

Another way to reduce the pH level of your aquarium is to use peat moss. It has the ability to release gallic and tannic acid into the water, which helps in reducing the pH level. These chemicals will go after bicarbonates that are usually found on tanks with higher pH levels which helps in lowering the hardness and also the pH level.

But how to use the peat moss in the aquarium? The peat moss can be put inside the filter or outside the filter. You can also place it outside an aquarium in a different container but use water for the main aquarium. Another way to use pet moss is to use it as a substrate layer for the aquarium.

Peat Pellets

Using a peat pellet can also effectively lower the pH level of your aquarium. You can add a peat pellet to the internal or external canister. It will help in reducing not only the pH level but also the carbonate hardness. The peat pellets will release tanning to the aquarium to make them look natural and effectively lower the pH level. All you need to do is pre-soak the pellet for 1 to 2 days, adding to the filter. After soaking, you can rinse the tap water then add it to the filter of your aquarium.

Chemicals

One of the most common ways to lower pH levels in aquariums is using chemical solutions. Several products are being offered in the market that uses different active ingredients. Some products use diluted acids, while others use natural methods like tannins and other organic matter that come with acidic quality. Should you decide to use chemicals, my advice is to follow the label’s directions to achieve maximum results.

Conclusion

If you find out that the pH level of your aquarium water is so high, then learning how to lower the pH level in a fish tank is an essential skill for you. Even though some fish might need a specific pH level preference, having a stable pH is more important than looking for a specific value. Adjusting the pH level can be dangerous if you do not know what you are doing.

Also, unless you are trying to breed wild and sensitive fish that need extremely high or low pH levels, it will be better not to change the pH level of your aquarium. Most regular fish will I recommend following adapt to the water as long as it is well-maintained and clean while the pH level is stable. There is no need to change the pH level of your aquarium if the fish is alive, thriving, and showing no signs of stress.

best nitrate test kit

Taking care of an aquarium is not all fun and games. It is crucial to monitor the tank’s condition constantly to ensure that your fish is completely healthy and happy. One way to keep tabs on your aquarium’s health status is to use the best nitrate test kit that you can afford.

Once the nitrate level in your aquarium reaches a certain level, the water essentially turns into a toxic soup. Your fish will also start going belly-up soon if you do not do anything quickly.

The tricky part here is that you can’t tell just by looking at the water if it has a high nitrate level. The only way for you to do it accurately is to use an aquarium nitrate test kit. This article will teach you everything you need to know about nitrate test kits and which one is best for you.

Best Nitrate Test Kit Reviews

1. Salifert Nitrate (No3) Test Kit

salifert nitrate (no3) test kit

I used to use a digital nitrate test kit to check the nitrate level of my freshwater aquarium regularly, and I think it is a suitable nitrate test kit reef2reef. However, using it is kind of tiring as there are so many steps to follow.

This kit was so much easier to use with only three steps involved. You do not have to do any rigorous shaking whatsoever. In less than five minutes, you will get the results of the test.

At first, I thought that something that works this fast would not be all that accurate, and I was pleasantly surprised at how well it actually worked. This nitrate test kit is so sensitive that it can detect changes in nitrate levels as low as 0.2ppm.

You may not need this kind of accuracy, but it is a good way to figure out if the nitrate level in your aquarium is just high, or you need to replace the water right away.

I am also surprised that this product is quite budget-friendly. I would have gladly paid more for a test that is this quick and accurate, but I am thankful that this nitrate test kit exists.
For a low price, you can get a box that contains enough medium for approximately 60 tests. It is more than enough to keep even the most paranoid aquarist occupied for at least a couple of months.

Another thing I liked about this Salifert nitrate test kit is that you can use it for both saltwater and freshwater aquariums. This test has high accuracy, making it the ideal test for saltwater aquariums, especially reef aquariums with a delicate balance. Although you do not need that much accuracy for freshwater tanks, it is still a handy test to have.

The problem I had with this test is that the medium is a bit too coarse, making it quite difficult to get a level scoop. It is the only difficult part of using this kit. Your measurement needs to be precise if you want to get an accurate reading.

Pros
  • Easy to use and provides quick results
  • Provides accurate readings
  • Budget-friendly
  • Can test both freshwater and saltwater aquariums
  • Ideal for sensitive reef aquariums
Cons
  • The included scoop is not very precise

In my opinion, this product is the nitrate test that you need to use if you are looking for something fast yet highly accurate. It also helped a lot that this kit is truly affordable and easy to use.

2. NYOS Nitrate (NO3) Reefer Test Kit

nyos nitrate (no3) reefer test kit

If you have a reef tank, then you need to get this high-range nitrate test kit. I know how much of a struggle it is to keep a reef tank. I noticed that even the slightest spike in nitrate levels can easily affect the fish and the live rock. I use this test to monitor the water condition in my reef tank closely, and it has never failed me yet.

Other nitrate testing kits use a pink pigment for showing results and the charts that they provide have very similar-looking shades for different nitrate level readings. This makes it extremely difficult to figure out the correct amount.

What is great about this testing kit is that it uses a yellow pigment. The gradation between different levels is very clear, too, making it a lot easier to read.

Other nitrate testing kits, like digital nitrate tester aquarium, offer fast results, but this one is almost twice as fast. I have tried a lot of other testing kits before, and they average around 9 minutes before providing an accurate reading.

This kit only needed five minutes for the test solution to change color so I can start getting a nitrate reading.

Moreover, there are only two steps to follow. I am also pleased that it does not involve any shaking since it leads to less mess.

Even though the NYOS nitrate test kit is not the most affordable ones in the market, it still provides a lot of value for your money. You will be getting 50 test kits in one package.

It is almost a year’s worth of test kits if you are testing your aquarium every week. If you are testing even more often than that, then you will still be spending a lot less than if you were using another brand.

The problem I had with this test kit is with the included hardware (test tubes, caps, etc.). This test would have gotten higher marks if the caps for the test tubes were screw-on instead of just being pressed on. The caps that come with this kit leak quite a lot when you swirl the contents.

Pros
  • Gives accurate readings
  • Easier to read compared to other tests
  • Provides results in just 5 minutes
  • Gives more value for money
  • Provides almost a year’s worth of nitrate tests
Cons
  • The included hardware is flimsy

This is a surprisingly accurate nitrate test kit. You will surely be getting a lot of value for your money. However, you need to be careful when using the included vials as they are not as water-tight as other test kits.

3. AQUA CARE PRO Freshwater Test Strips

aqua care pro freshwater test strips

This product may not be the most accurate nitrate test kit in the market, but it makes up for being user-friendly. Unlike a liquid test kit and electronic nitrate tester, you do not have to set up any equipment to test the water in your aquarium.

Just take a test strip, hold it underwater for a couple of seconds, and then compare the colors with those in the chart. It will take less than a couple of minutes to get a rough reading of the water condition.

Another great thing about this product is that it does not just test for nitrates. I even discovered that it is a six-in-one test. It means that you are testing the water for nitrate, nitrite, general hardness, carbonate hardness, pH, and chlorine. You will essentially be getting a general report on the health of your aquarium.

You will also be getting your money’s worth with this kit. What you will be receiving are 64 test strips per package. In other words, you will be getting more than a year’s worth of test strips, which is already a good deal. If you are like most aquarists who test the water of your aquarium at least once a week, then it can help monitor its health.

Aside from the test strips, you will also receive a bonus gift from Aqua Care Pro with every purchase. If you are a beginner, you will appreciate the free e-book that came with the test kit. This book is full of tips from experienced aquarists that newbies will benefit from. It takes most of the hassle linked to aquarium keeping in more ways than one.

I do have some issues with the quality of the test strips. There were times when a test square from the strip would fall off and sink into the water. It has happened more than once, so Aqua Care Pro should consider using a stronger adhesive for their test strips.

Pros
  • Capable of testing for different parameters, instead of just nitrates
  • Faster and easier to use compared to liquid test kits
  • Comes with a year’s supply of test kits
  • Packaged with a free -book on aquarium keeping
  • The company has excellent customer service
Cons
  • The test pads sometimes fall off in the water

This test kit might not have the same kind of accuracy that experienced aquarists look for. However, for beginners who want a reliable and affordable way to see if their setups are still healthy or whenever they are in the midst of an aquarium emergency, this kit can definitely help.

4. BOSIKE Aquarium Test Strips

bosike aquarium test strips

Unlike liquid tests, this freshwater nitrate test kit can provide you with results in just a couple of seconds. You do not need to prepare any vials or powders. There is also no waiting required. You just have to dip a test strip in the water for a couple of seconds then wait until the test squares change color, which is just another couple of seconds.

Beginner aquarists often start with freshwater aquariums. It is mainly because they are not as delicate as saltwater setups. However, that does not mean that they thrive when left on their own. These test strips are calibrated to work best for freshwater aquariums. It means you get readings that will tell you the right parameters you need to go for.

Speaking of water parameters, this product is not just a nitrate test kit. It can also test for nitrite, chlorine, pH, and total hardness. This means you will be getting six different tests in one strip.

You will get an overall health report for your aquarium, which is nice since you will know exactly what you need to fix. For instance, the water might not have a high nitrate level, but there might be some chlorine left.

You will be getting more than your money’s worth with this test kit. For an affordable price, you will be getting 125 test strips. That is more than two years’ worth of water tests if you regularly check every week. This single purchase will provide you with a means to monitor the health of your aquarium for two years.

Now, keep in mind that no test strip can beat a good liquid test kit, including this product. However, you can expect results that are at least in the ballpark of the actual condition. It is more than enough for most aquarists who are just interested in keeping their fish alive for as long as possible.

Pros
  • Quick and easy to use
  • Calibrated for freshwater setups
  • Can test for six different parameters
  • The package comes with more than two years’ supply of test strips
  • The test strips are made of quality materials
Cons
  • Not nearly as accurate as liquid tests

This nitrate water test kit may not be up to the standards of accuracy that experienced aquarists would like. However, I can still say that it is good enough for those who are just starting at the hobby.

5. RUNBO Aquarium Test Strips

runbo aquarium test strips

Here is the best part about getting this test kit. You will receive 100 pieces of test strips in one package. It means that you will be getting almost two years’ worth of test strips for one affordable price. If you do not have enough room in your budget for a steady supply of highly accurate liquid testing kits, then I think this is the next best thing.

One reason why many aquarium hobbyists prefer using test strips is that they can also test for other water parameters, not just nitrate levels. This product, for example, can test for five other parameters aside from nitrate. You will receive vital information about chlorine level, nitrite, carbonization, water hardness, and even the water’s pH level.

Although liquid test kits provide results in minutes, test strips are still much faster. You only need to take a test strip, and then dip it into the water, making sure that you submerge all the squares.

After just two seconds, take out the strip. Hold it horizontally to prevent the pigments from bleeding into each other. After a minute, compare the test strip with the included chart.

I have heard some people complain that the test strips are not very dependable because they are not consistent. This means that two strips may provide vastly different results. So far, I have not experienced any inconsistencies using this test kit, and I am almost halfway through the 100 test strips.

The only issue I have with this product is with the packaging. To be more specific, it is the chart printed on the bottle. After a couple of months, the colors on the chart would start to fade, making it almost impossible to get any kind of accurate reading. It would have been better if RUNBO used non-fading ink for printing their labels.

Pros
  • Provides 100 test strips in one package
  • Tests for six different parameters in one strip
  • Get results in less than two minutes
  • Made of quality materials for uniform results
  • Perfect for use on both saltwater and freshwater aquariums
Cons
  • The chart on the bottle fades after a couple of months

These test strips are surprisingly accurate for their type of kit. Even if you have been keeping aquariums for years, these test strips may impress you.

6. Qguai Aquarium Test Strips

qguai aquarium test strips

Unlike other test kits that only test for nitrates, this product tests for 8 other parameters, namely pH, nitrite, carbonate, total hardness, alkalinity, chlorine, iron, and copper. You will be receiving a rather complete report about the overall health of your aquarium setup, which means you can catch any problem before it gets worse.

It does not matter if you have a saltwater or freshwater setup. You can even have both while getting the chance to use this test kit. It adds a lot of convenience in owning several different aquariums or fish ponds. You do not need to set up different testing kits for every one of them.

Using these test strips also does not take a lot of time at all. You will only need a couple of minutes to finish testing. The only thing you should do is dip the test strip into the water for no more than two seconds.

Wait for around a minute for the test squares to change colors. Although it is not quite as accurate compared to liquid testing kits, it still gives you a quick glimpse of what is happening in your tank.

This test kit, based on the number of individual tests, is just a fraction of the price of other fancy test kits. Also, every package contains 50 separate test strips, which is almost enough to cover your testing needs for a year (supposing you test your aquarium every week).

Should you use this product as the only means of testing water quality? In my opinion, it is a good backup test kit, as it is not quite as accurate as other similar products. However, it is a good idea to keep a good supply of this product to help confirm your other tests.

Pros
  • Tests for 9 different parameters
  • Useful for both saltwater and freshwater setups
  • Quick and easy to get a reading
  • Affordable price and excellent value for money
  • Works even for outdoor setups
Cons
  • Not as accurate as other brands

Yes, this test strip may not be as accurate as I would have wanted. However, I still think that for its intended purpose, which is tank monitoring, it works great.

What to Look For When Buying Nitrate Test Kits

aquarium nitrate test kit

When choosing a nitrate tester aquarium, you need to consider several things. Keep in mind that you will be using the test kits to monitor the health of your aquarium. If you do not use the right nitrate testing kit, then you may not have enough information to keep your aquarium healthy. Here’s what to consider when shopping for this kit:

Ease of Use

If you are a beginner or even an experienced aquarist, you should opt for a nitrate test kit that is easy to use and does not take that much time. Some kits may require setting up a small laboratory just to conduct water testing. It can be a bit overwhelming, especially for those who are just starting with aquarium keeping.

This is where water test strips are at an advantage. You just need to get a test strip and dip it into the water for a second or two. It should be just enough to get the test squares wet. In under a minute, you can start to compare the strip against the included chart to check the water’s parameters.

However, you can also find liquid test kits that are not that hard to use. Most of them only require you to follow two steps. The first is to scoop a certain amount of the test medium into a container and then place a couple of drops of water in it.

If you are only looking into keeping your aquarium safe and comfortable for your fish, then the test strips will work well enough for you. They do not take a long time to use. They also only need little in terms of preparation. With that, it is safe to say that they are perfect for people who are always busy and do not have that much free time to spare.

Accuracy

If you are a serious aquarist, which means you need to have absolute control over all the parameters of your tanks, you need to get the best nitrate kit that provides the most accurate reading. It also means that you will need to get a liquid test kit as the strips are not that accurate and would only give you a ballpark figure.

The great thing about liquid test kits is that they have very low tolerances. Some can even tell differences of 2ppm. These test kits can tell you even if there is a slight uptick in nitrate levels, so you can immediately tinker around with the tank to get the level back to normal.

However, if you do not have that much free time to dote on your tank, you need to use the most accurate test strip you can find. It means you should test out as many brands as you can, and maybe compare the results with a liquid test kit.

You should then try to find out which one gives the most accurate and consistent results. You can also consult online a Hanna nitrate test kit review to get an idea of what products work well.

Parameters Measured

Nitrate is not the only toxin that you need to keep an eye out for. However, it does not mean that you need to purchase separate test kits for each of them. You will find liquid test kits and test strips that can test for several toxins. However, test strips are the ones with more parameters tested at the same time.

Having several parameters tested at the same time will save a lot of time and money. However, you will need to compromise when it comes to accuracy if you are choosing a test kit that tests multiple parameters.

Value for Money

This is where you will need to give a bit of effort. You will need to search for a test kit that has acceptable accuracy, tests for more than just nitrate, provides a lot of tests, and is also reasonably priced.

Finding one product that fulfills all these criteria can be a bit tricky. You may need to compromise in some areas, but it is still possible to find a high-quality one.

Frequently Asked Questions

digital nitrate tester aquarium

How to Use Nitrate Test Kits?

The answer will depend on the type of test kit you bought. Most liquid test kits usually require around two to three steps. First, you have to place a bit of testing medium in the included vial. Next, using the included dropper, put the required amount of the water to test into the vial.

Swirl it around a bit for a minute or two, or until the water changes color. Finally, compare the color of the water against the chart included with the test kit. The color that is the closest match to the water is the approximate nitrate level in the water.

Test strips are a bit different. You just take a strip, dip it inside the aquarium for around two seconds, take it out, and hold it horizontally to prevent the colors from bleeding into each other. Once the strip changes color, compare the strip with the chart to figure out the nitrate level.

How do Nitrate Kits Work?

The liquid tests use a nitrate-reacting reagent to provide results. When you mix certain amounts of the reagents with the water you need to test, the reagent will react to the nitrate in the water if there is any. The water will turn a certain shade of pinkish-red when there is nitrate in the water. The brighter the color, the more nitrate there is.

In the case of test strips, each paper strip comes with several test squares. Each of the squares contains reagents that react with different chemicals. They turn into different colors when they are present.

Conclusion

Keeping track of your aquarium’s health is of the utmost importance. You want your fish to live for as long as possible, don’t you? Having the best nitrate test kit at your disposal will allow you to do just that. Nitrate test kits will tell you if your aquarium is in tip-top shape. Most importantly, they will tell you if the aquarium is in dire need of help.

best food for arowana silver fish

The Arowana is one of the most popular freshwater aquarium fish in the world. Many people keep this fish because they believe it brings them good luck, but many more do so because it is a beautiful fish.

Arowanas come in many different sizes and colors, but they do share one quality, they’re all very expensive and they are not suitable for beginners. Because of that, they deserve the best food for Arowana that you can find.

Arowana food has quite a diverse lineup of products, which is what to expect considering the popularity of the fish. However, not all Arowana foods are equal. Some are always better than others.

Also, just because a product is expensive, that does not mean it is of superior quality compared to lower-priced options.

This article will try to teach you what qualities you need to look for when you are shopping for Arowana’s food. Not only will you be getting a simple buying guide, but you will also be receiving a couple of insightful product recommendations.

You no longer need to worry about your prized fish not getting enough nutrition from its food once you know how to choose the best Arowana food.

Best Food for Arowana Reviews

1. Hikari Tropical Arowana Sticks Fish Food

hikari tropical arowana sticks fish food

My Arowana was first fed using live bloodworms, but after a couple of months, I found that this practice was getting quite expensive. I tried a couple of different products, but my picky eater would not even get close to them.

This product, on the other hand, took a bit of convincing to make my fish eat it. My Arowana now loves it and it can’t seem to get enough of the food.

One of the things that I think made the transition easier for my fish is that this looks just like bloodworms, or at least it does to fish. One of the reasons why bloodworms are expensive is that they need to undergo a lot of quality control so sellers do not accidentally send out batches containing harmful bacteria and/or parasites.

I would not dare use the cheap bloodworms from shady sellers because they don’t guarantee safety. This fish food does not carry any of those risks. However, I noticed that they do have the same, if not more, benefits.

One benefit that my red chili Arowana got from this Arowana fish food is the high number of carotenoids. Carotenoids is a naturally-occurring coloring agent commonly found in fruits and vegetables, typically in carrots and beets.

When ingested by Arowanas, this can drastically increase their coloration. My Arowana was a bit orange-red before I started feeding it with this fish food. Now, it is bright red.

Aside from carotenoids, this product also comes with a lot of other beneficial vitamins and nutrients. One vitamin that it has in abundance is Vitamin C. Just like carotenoids, Vitamin C also improves the color of the Arowana.

Aside from that, this vitamin also greatly improves the fish’s immune system. This is good as when you are taking care of an expensive fish, you will want it to be as healthy as it can be.

The only issue that I have with this fish food is that it contains quite a lot of extender ingredients, like starches and fish meal. This means that I still need to supplement my Arowana with a bit more protein in the form of mealworms every other day. On the other hand, I do understand that these are essential to reduce costs.

Pros
  • Looks just like bloodworms, but without the parasites and bacteria
  • Contains a lot of carotenoids to improve the natural colors
  • Has all the recommended nutrients in the right amounts
  • Improves immunity as it is rich in Vitamin C
Cons
  • Takes quite a while before some Arowanas can get used to it
  • Contains a lot of extender ingredients

We all know that good quality silver Arowana food can be expensive, especially if your fish is used to eating bloodworms. This fish food looks just like bloodworms to the fish, and they would be fooled right up until they put it in their mouths.

It took a while before I got my Arowana eating this food regularly, but it eventually did. This food is not just affordable. It also provides more than enough nutrition for my Arowana.

2. Tetra JumboKrill Freeze Dired Jumbo Shrimp

tetra jumbokrill freeze dired jumbo shrimp

This product contains real jumbo shrimp, which is one of the best sources of protein for fish that need it. These include Arowanas and other large aquarium fish. These freeze-dried shrimps float on the water, which makes them ideal for Arowanas who are top feeders.

I have been feeding this to my Arowana for a couple of months and all that protein made it grow quite fast. Also, because this food acts as an appetite enhancer, it turned my fish into a voracious eater.

Another nice thing about these freeze-dried shrimps is that they come complete with their heads and shells. This is important because they contain a lot of nutrients, like calcium and Vitamin E.

In addition, the shells contain fiber. This can help make the fish’s digestive system even more efficient. It can help Arowanas absorb more nutrients from the food it eats. It also means that the fish would produce less waste.

These shrimps also contain a natural chemical called astaxanthin, which helps make the fish’s colors brighter. My Arowana is now a brighter red color than it was just a couple of months ago.

Astaxanthin also makes Arowanas scales and skin stronger and healthier. If your fish has a couple of scratches or gashes, this will help it heal faster and prevent excessive scarring.

Aside from the vitamins and nutrients that are naturally in the shrimp, this product is further fortified with Vitamin E. Just like in humans, Vitamin E helps to make the Arowana’s skin and scales healthier.

I am thankful that I took a lot of pictures of my Arowana because I could tell how much it improved since I started feeding it with this product. It has a brighter red color now, and it seems that the scales are also a lot shinier than they were before.

I do have a somewhat serious complaint about this product. When I checked the contents of the bag, I noticed that almost a quarter of the contents were crushed shells and heads of the shrimp.

If I were keeping small fish, they might eat this stuff, but my Arowana won’t. In addition, putting this in the tank will only make the water cloudy. For the price I paid for this stuff, I expected to at least feed all the contents to my Arowana.

Pros
  • Contains real, freeze-dried shrimps that contain a lot of protein
  • Shrimps come complete with shells to aid in digestion
  • Contains astaxanthin, which enhances color
  • Fortified with Vitamin E to enhance the appearance of the Arowana
Cons
  • A good amount of the weight of this product consists of crumbled up shrimps
  • A bit on the expensive side

This product is not an “everyday” type of food. You should only feed this to your Arowana every other day or so, just to keep its appetite up

It is a shame that for something that is this expensive, there are a lot of crushed-up bits at the bottom of the package. It seemed like such a waste because my Arowana certainly won’t eat it and it would only cloud the water.

3. Jacksuper Aquarium arowana Fish Food

jacksuper aquarium arowana fish food

These are some of the largest freeze-dried shrimps that I have bought so far. These shrimps are around two inches long on average, so I only need to feed a couple of pieces for my fish to feel full.

Since this is a large jar and it contains a lot of shrimp, it can last my fish easily for a month or two. I only feed this to my Arowana maybe two or three times a week so it will still eat its regular food.

Another nice thing I liked about this most suitable food for Arowana growth is that the shrimp still have their shells and heads. People tend to not eat the heads and shells of shrimp, but they are quite beneficial for large fish like Arowanas.

The heads and shells contain a lot of calcium, so it helps strengthen the bones and skin of the fish. Those parts also help improve the digestion of the Arowana by cleaning the digestive tract.

The best thing about feeding Arowanas with these freeze-dried shrimps is that they contain a lot of protein. If you have a young Arowana, then you would want to feed it with this food every day if you can. This will help your fish reach its potential size quicker.

The protein also helps injured or sick fish recover faster as well. My Arowana tore its fin a couple of months ago, but it got better quickly after I fed it with dried shrimp.

Aside from protein, freeze-dried shrimp also contains color-enhancing ingredients. Shrimp naturally contains astaxanthin, which is a color-enhancing substance, particularly the color red.

When I first got my chili Arowana, it was a bit on the orange-red side of the spectrum. Fortunately, after a couple of months of eating this food, it turned bright red and looks healthier than ever.

A word of warning about this food – it stinks to high heavens. So, you should close the lid tightly after feeding your fish, or else your entire living room will smell like the beach at low tide.

Aside from the smell, another thing I did not like is that the label is in Chinese. One of the annoying things about this is that the amount printed on the label is wrong, which must be a translation error.

Pros
  • Contains large freeze-dried shrimps
  • Great value for money – more shrimps for the price
  • Jumbo shrimps contain a lot of proteins
  • Contains color-enhancing ingredients
Cons
  • The smell is a bit too strong

The label is in Chinese and some of the information stated is wrong, maybe due to translation issues

Regardless of the smell, this is one of the most cost-effective options for the most preferred food for the Arowana silverfish I have tried so far. I can forgive the errors in translation, even with the amount stated, since the contents are quite beneficial to my Arowana. My fish loves this food. It would immediately gobble this up the moment it hits the water.

4. Northfin Arowana Fish Food

northfin arowana fish food

One of the things that I appreciate about this product is that it holds its shape even after soaking in the water for almost an hour. This makes cleaning up the tank after feeding that much easier. It also keeps the water clear.

This food does not sink, so fishing leftovers out of the tank is much easier. I have used other fish food that would almost immediately disintegrate in the water and they clogged up my filter quickly.

Do not be surprised when you read the ingredients list and you find montmorillonite clay. This is quite beneficial. Montmorillonite clay helps get rid of the toxins that have accumulated inside the Arowana.

It also helps clean the digestive tract. This will make your fish more efficient at absorbing nutrients from its food. In addition, it can make it produce less waste than before. This means that your fish becomes healthier while keeping the ammonia level in the water low to none.

Another nice thing about this fish food is that it does not contain any artificial colors and preservatives. The color of this fish food might not look appetizing to us humans, but fish do not seem to mind how it looks though.

It also does not contain any artificial preservatives. It is just completely dehydrated to keep the food good for a long time. Arowanas are not quite as fragile as other fish but it is still better to not feed them with unnecessary chemicals.

I also like how these pellets keep their shape even when they have been in the water for a long time. I have used other pellet foods that would easily break apart once they got wet, and they resulted in the water in my tank getting cloudy.

This is helpful, especially when I was still conditioning my Arowana to eat this food. It made cleaning up afterward easy.

As mentioned earlier, I had to train my Arowana to eat this food, which took a couple of weeks. I had to make my Arowana quite famished to make it eat this food; otherwise, it will not even look at the pellets.

This may not be that appealing for Arowanas, but I had to make my fish eat this because it is nutritious and a lot more economical. Also, if your Arowana is not mature yet, this food might be too hard and big for it.

Pros
  • Contains different kinds of protein sources
  • Has montmorillonite clay
  • Does not contain artificial colors and added hormones
  • Floats and does not cloud the water
Cons
  • Takes a bit of convincing to make my Arowana eat it

Not ideal for young and small Arowana – The reason is that the pellets are too big and hard.

This is a great fish food for Arowana, especially if you are on a tight budget. However, I need to warn you that it will take a while to convince most fish to eat this product.

Eventually, Arowana will eat this product exclusively, which is great because it does contain a lot of essential and beneficial nutrients. I am glad I stuck to training my Arowana to eat this food because it is a lot healthier now.

5. San Francisco Bay Asf71340 Freeze Dried Krill

san francisco bay asf71340 freeze dried krill

I do not recommend that you feed your Arowana with just this product, but you do have to treat this more like an appetizer. I give my fish maybe one or two dried shrimp just to whet its appetite, thus making it easier to feed it with its regular, more nutritious fish food.

The only time when I would give to a fish daily instead of two or three times a week is when it is sick or recovering from injuries.

One thing I liked about this product is that even finicky eaters cannot resist this food. My Arowana is quite stubborn and would not eat a lot of other fish food but it immediately liked this food.

For me, this product provided a way to make Arowanas eat a diverse selection of food. However, you should be careful not to feed your fish with this stuff too often as it will cause difficulties in making it eat other food.

Shrimps naturally contain astaxanthin, which is a substance that helps enhance the color of fish. If you have a red tail golden, chili red, or golden Arowana, they can benefit a lot from the astaxanthin in shrimp.

I have been feeding this product to my red Arowana two to three times a week for around three months now. I have noticed a significant improvement in its color.

Shrimps are also excellent sources of protein. If you have a young/juvenile Arowana, you should supplement its diet with this product so it can achieve its maximum growth potential in just a couple of months.

Other vitamins and nutrients also further enhance this product. The presence of such nutrients improves the health of Arowanas and makes them more energetic.

I sincerely would like to give higher marks for this product, but the manufacturers seem to have problems with quality control. It seemed like 1 out of every 5 jars that I get comes from a bad batch.

The shrimps are noticeably darker, they smell bad, and my Arowana would not even touch them. For something this expensive, I expected that there would be better quality control.

Pros
  • Stimulates the appetite of Arowanas and other types of fish
  • Contains astaxanthin for improved coloration and vibrant patterns
  • Even finicky eaters will find this product irresistible.
  • Contains protein and other nutrients for health and energy
Cons
  • Quality control seems lacking – The product seems inconsistent
  • The container is flimsy – It almost did not survive shipping

This product should have gotten a much higher rating if not for the dodgy quality control. For its price, I expected to at least have consistency with the quality. On the other hand, I often get a good batch of this fish food and my Arowana just loves it. This freeze-dried shrimp helped a lot to get my fish to eat more and become healthier.

6. Aquatic Foods Inc Arowana Dried Arctic Krill

aquatic foods inc arowana dried arctic krill

This product is just straight-up, freeze-dried krill. There are no other ingredients added. If you are finicky with what your precious Arowana eats, you can trust this product.

Unlike other brands I’ve tried, it does not contain artificial colors to make the shrimp look more orange or red. These shrimps may look like they are pale orange but that is how dried shrimp is supposed to look.

Another reason why I like this product is that it is much cheaper than other brands. For the same price as a 100-gram jar of shrimp from a known brand, you can get a half-pound bag from this brand. This means you can provide your fish with more protein without breaking the bank.

Aside from protein, these freeze-dried shrimps come with their heads and shells still attached. What does this mean for your Arowana? Well, because they are harder to digest, the heads and shells of shrimp provide fiber.

This fiber can improve the digestion of your fish. By cleaning the digestive tract, your Arowana will become more efficient at absorbing vitamins and nutrients from its food.

Also, krill and shrimp naturally contain astaxanthin, a chemical that enhances the color of fish. If your Arowana’s colors look a bit dull and its scales are not as shiny as you want them to be, supplement its regular diet with this freeze-dried krill.

If you do so, you can make it look much better than it used to be. Mine looked just fine before I fed it with this fish food and I did not know that it could look a whole lot better.

However, for the price of this fish food, do not be surprised if there are some issues. One is that it seems like it is not as tasty as other brands. I had to convince my Arowana to eat this, unlike other brands that it would immediately gobble up.

Also, almost a quarter of the bag’s contents is just heads of shrimp, which my Arowana refuses to eat on its own. However, I find that the heads of shrimp make a great fertilizer.

Pros
  • Contains no artificial colors, additives, and preservatives
  • A lot cheaper compared to other brands
  • Comes with the heads and shells intact
  • Does not easily crumble to dust
Cons
  • Not quite as tasty as other freeze-dried shrimp brands
  • Almost a quarter of the bag is just shells and heads of krill

Although it is quite annoying that a significant amount of the bag’s contents were just shrimp heads and shells, it is still a worthwhile product. It costs just a fraction of the price of other well-known brands but you will also be getting more. I may just be fortunate that my Arowana eats this but you should try this with your fish.

7. Sequoia Freeze Dried Bloodworms Fish Food

sequoia freeze dried bloodworms fish food

The thing I liked the most about this product is that it contains 100% real bloodworms that have protein. Bloodworms contain more protein per pound compared to beef, so your Arowana will surely benefit from it.

If you have a juvenile fish, it can use all the protein in this product as it will help it grow bigger and healthier. Adult Arowana can benefit from this food too because protein helps in retaining mass.

Aside from the naturally-occurring protein in the bloodworm, Sequoia made them even more beneficial by enhancing them with vitamins and minerals. This product is so full of good stuff that you can use this as a nutritional supplement for your Arowana.

I don’t exclusively feed this to my Arowana. I just give this to my fish no more than four times a week just so it would eat other foods, too.

Aside from the vitamins and mineral enhancers, this product does not contain any other ingredients. The bright red color is the natural color of the bloodworms. There are no artificial colors.

There are also no preservatives used in this product. The freeze-drying process is enough to keep the bloodworms from spoiling. If you are worried about feeding your Arowana with too many chemicals, you can trust this product.

Speaking of the freeze-drying process, it also kills all traces of bacteria and parasites from the bloodworms. The bloodworms are almost completely dehydrated so bacteria and other microorganisms cannot survive in them.

This is one of my concerns when feeding bloodworms to my Arowana. If you do not get your live bloodworms from a reputable source, there is a chance that nasty stuff contaminated them.

I like this product quite a lot but some areas can use a lot of improvement. I have no complaints about the contents but the packaging could have been a lot better. A couple of jars I ordered in the past year did not survive the delivery. They arrive with the seal already broken or the jar cracked and the contents have spilled all over.

Pros
  • Bloodworms are rich in protein
  • The product is further enhanced with additional vitamins and minerals
  • Does not contain any other ingredients – There are no preservatives or artificial colors
  • The freeze-drying process eliminates threats of bacteria and parasites
Cons
  • The packaging could be better
  • You might be getting less than what the label said

For the price, these dried bloodworms are hard to beat. However, you need to treat this product like you would the treats for your dog or cat. Do not feed this to your Arowana too often or else it would not eat anything else.

I limit feedings to around three times a week. It is just to stimulate the appetite of my Arowana and supplement the amount of protein it gets.

What to Look For When Buying a Food for Arowana

best pellet food for arowana

You need to be very particular when you are shopping for your Arowana’s food, not because they have sensitive constitutions, but because it deserves the best. If you feed your Arowana with the top food that you can find, it will look the best that it could.

Here are some of the things that you need to look out for when shopping for your Arowana:

Floating

Arowanas are top-feeders. This means that they have mouths that turn upwards. The best pellet food for Arowana is, therefore, one that floats on top of the water. In the wild, Arowanas would usually eat insects that fall on top of the water. The larger ones can even eat frogs and birds.

It is important to buy food for your Arowana that can float on top of the water. Also, they should be able to hold their shape even after soaking for a while. This will make it easier for the fish to eat the food. This also makes cleaning up later much easier.

Protein Content

Large fishes like Arowanas need a lot of protein because they are natural carnivores. Baby Arowana food needs to contain a lot more protein than adults because they are in the stage in life where they will experience very rapid growth.

It would be best to feed young Arowanas with live worms, small fish, or insects. After that, gradually change their diets to high-protein pellets or freeze-dried worms or shrimps.

Color Enhancers

You will be surprised at how much your fish color will be if you feed it the right food for Arowana. Look for foods that contain carotenoids and/or astaxanthin. These are naturally occurring chemicals that help improve the color of all fish.

Shrimp and krill naturally contain a lot of astaxanthin while orange and yellow vegetables contain carotenoids. You can feed your Arowana with freeze-dried shrimps occasionally. You can also try feeding it with bits of carrots.

The easier method is to just look for the most common food for Arowana color. They are the ones that contain carotenoids, astaxanthin, or both. After a couple of months, your Arowana will have much brighter colors than before.

Frequently Asked Questions

best food for arowana

Is Pellet Food Good for Arowana?

It depends on the ingredients the Arowana food pellets contain. The pellet food should contain a lot of proteins and fats to mimic the natural diet of the carnivorous Arowana. Also, you should choose floating fish food pellets because Arowanas are top feeders.

How often Should you Feed Arowana?

Juvenile Arowanas will need to eat up to three times a day while adults will only need one time. Also, do not just dump the food in the tank and leave. You should only give enough food that your fish can eat within two minutes. Any food left floating after two minutes should be fished out as it will only foul the water.

Conclusion

Arowanas are among the most expensive aquarium fishes that you can own. Depending on the breed, a single Arowana can be worth more than a high-end car. Even if you are keeping one of the common Arowana species, it is still a large investment on your part, so you should do your best to keep your fish happy and healthy.

Since you made it this far, you already learned how to choose the best food for Arowana. You will be quite impressed at how much your precious scaly friend’s appearance improves after just a couple of months of eating the right food. This will also ensure that you and your Arowana will be together for many more years to come.

best food for mollies

Small fishes, like mollies, tetras, danios, and guppies, may look tiny but they are quite voracious eaters. They are constantly darting back and forth in the water, so they build up quite an appetite. You have to feed them with the best food for mollies once or twice a day, so they will have enough energy for their daily activities.

Normies in aquarium keeping would think that the food is okay if the fish can fit it inside their mouths. However, the size of the pellets is just one of the many different details you need to consider. If you want your community tank to thrive and your fish to look as colorful and vibrant as possible, they will need the best fish food for mollies.

This article will teach you the differences between quality fish food, and other products that are not quite as good. You will be receiving a couple of product recommendations for fish food as well as a short buying guide that might help you figure out which product is worth your time and money.

Best Food for Mollies Revies

1. Hikari Fish mollies Food

hikari fish mollies food

Hikari is well-known for producing some of the best quality fish food in the market, and this product is one of the best foods for mollies and guppies. This fish food is slow-sinking. In other words, it will float on the surface for a while.

After that, it will slowly sink to the bottom. I like this quality because it gives all the fish enough time to feed. Even the bottom feeders can have their share.

Despite the fact that mollies do not grow beyond an inch in size, they still need a lot of protein in their diet and that is just what they can get from this product and in huge amounts to boot. This fish food’s main ingredient is fish meal, which is an excellent source of protein.

In addition, it also contains plant-based protein. I keep a couple of livebearers in my aquarium and they absolutely like this molly baby fish food. The fry that eventually comes out loves it, too. In addition to being growth boosters, this fish food also contains a lot of color enhancers.

Aside from mollies, I also have a couple of neon-colored tetras. After just a couple of weeks of eating this fish food, their colors became so vibrant, you could swear they glow in the dark. If you want an aquarium bursting with color, feed your fish with this product.

Unlike fish flakes, you should avoid crushing these pellets, unless you will be feeding them to fry. These pellets are just the right size for small fish breeds. I have used pellets that were too big that they would just settle at the bottom and cloud the water.

Another nice thing about this fish food is that it does not disintegrate as quickly as other brands. This results in the water always being clear.

What I do not like that much about this product is that it contains quite a lot of extender ingredients. This is not that much of an issue since they help keep the pellets together, but at its price, there should not be that many extenders. I know that it is subjective, but because this is a bit pricey, I believe that it should have more quality ingredients.

Pros
  • Semi-floating so all fish can get a bite
  • Contains a lot of protein for fish fry and livebearers
  • Has lots of color-enhancing ingredients
  • Just the right size for small fish
Cons
  • Contains a lot of extender ingredients
  • A bit expensive and only comes in small pouches

This fish food is not just ideal for small fish breeds. This is also great for fry, livebearers, and egg layers. If you are interested in breeding mollies and other breeds of small fish, you will do well when you use this product. Although this is a bit pricey compared to other brands, it is a worthy investment.

2. TetraMin Balanced Tropical Flake Food

tetramin balanced tropical flake food

Despite being marketed for tropical fish, this product is still suitable for freshwater fish as well. I have been feeding my mollies with this food for a couple of months and they have been quite healthy. Their colors have never been brighter and all of them are full of energy. If you’re worried that this would have negative effects on your fish, it won’t.

I keep a couple of 30-gallon tanks, and I don’t have much of a budget for fish food. This product provides good value for money, which is why it is one of my favorites. First, the price is quite reasonable.

Second, you will also be getting a large tub of fish food flakes. Since I have mostly small fish breeds in my tanks, nothing more than three inches, a single tub of this product can last at least two months.

This product is also ideal for mollies because this flaked food floats on the surface of the water. Mollies are mostly surface feeders, so they absolutely like this food. Also, after a couple of minutes, this fish food will start to sink, but not too quickly.

The flakes would stay suspended for a while in the middle of the tank. This makes it possible for the middle-feeding fish, like tetras and angelfish, to reach them.

Although this is not as nutrient-rich as the other, more expensive fish food brands, it still contains enough nutrients to keep your fish healthy. This fish food has balanced amounts of vitamins and minerals that fulfill the daily nutritional requirements. So, even though it is not quite as nutritious, this fish food is far from useless.

Although I do like this product, it does need improvements in certain areas. One thing that needs improvement is its flavor. I did not taste it personally but some of the picky eaters in my tanks took a while before they would even try eating this food.

I have tried other food brands, and some of them triggered a feeding frenzy, so their flavor might have been much better.

Pros
  • Great for both tropical and freshwater fish
  • Good value for money
  • Floats and sinks very slowly
  • Contains balanced nutrition for small fish
Cons
  • Picky eaters might not like this food

The flakes are quite large, making it necessary for you to crush the smaller fish

If you are on a tight budget, this product is a good compromise. It may not be the best food for molly fish, but it has the required amounts of vitamins and nutrients for maintaining their health.

The nice thing is that you will be getting a huge tub of food for a sensible amount of money, so you can be sure that your fish will always have food for at least a couple of months.

3. Fluval Bug Bites Bottom Feeder Fish Food

fluval bug bites bottom feeder fish food

Unlike other products, Fluval Bug Bites contains real black soldier fly larvae. Pound-for-pound, this ingredient contains more protein than even beef. What this means is that your fish can grow larger than they typically would. They will also be better at healing themselves from injuries and sicknesses.

Although mollies do not typically grow beyond 5 inches (including the fins), feeding them with protein-rich food will help them achieve their maximum size early.

This fish food, though, tends to crumble a bit when it hits the water, like homemade molly fish food. Fortunately, the crumbled pieces are not so fine that they would cloud the water. Besides, the mollies, danios, and tetras prefer that these pellets break apart as it makes them easier to swallow.

Aside from that, this fish food seems to be so tasty that it will often send the fish in my tank into a frenzy. Every pellet I drop into the tank is gone within seconds. This is why it would have been better if this product came in a larger container.

This product also comes formulated specifically to be easy to break down and digest. In other words, it is okay to break down almost all components of this fish food, turn them into nutrients, and immediately get absorbed into the fishes’ bodies.

This also makes the digestive system of the mollies so efficient that it almost halves the amount of waste that they produce. As a result, the ammonia and nitrate levels in my aquarium are always zero if not barely minimal.

Aside from protein, this product also contains a lot of Omega 3 and 6 fatty acids due to one of the ingredients being salmon meat. The Omega 3 and 6 fatty acids are responsible for keeping your fishes’ scales and skin healthy and bright.

In addition, they help brighten up their colors quite a bit. These nutrients also bolster the immune system of mollies, making them more able to resist illnesses.

I don’t have that much to complain about regarding the quality of this product, but I do kind of wish that it came in a bigger container. The small 1.6 oz jar goes fast in my household since I have three tanks.

Even if I feed this to my fish once or twice a week, which is the ideal molly fish feeding schedule, the entire jar is gone after a month. This might be a bit more economical if it came in a bigger jar since it will not be using as much packaging.

Pros
  • Contains a lot of protein
  • Does not break apart and cloud the tank
  • Easy to digest even for small fish
  • Contains Omega 3 and 6 fatty acids
Cons
  • Sold in small amounts
  • A bit expensive

If you have room in your budget, you should get a jar of this fish food and give it to your fish as a “sometimes treat”. I typically feed my livebearers and egg layers with this food a bit more frequently as this helps them stay healthy. This might be a tad expensive, but the protein content alone is enough to justify the higher-than-usual costs.

4. Aqueon Tropical Granules

aqueon tropical granules

If you want your mollies, and essentially all of the fish in your tank, to have bright colors and shiny skin and scales, you will love this product. It contains spirulina and astaxanthin, the ingredients that greatly enhance the colors of fish.

I was quite surprised at how colorful my mollies have become. They even got a tinge of red now that they did not have before.

Aside from color-enhancing ingredients, this product also contains an abundance of protein. Most of the protein contained in this fish food came from different sources, namely herring, krill, and squid meal.

In addition to being excellent sources of protein, they are also easier to absorb into the fishes’ bodies. I have been using these for nearly half a year, and I have noticed how much faster my fish have been growing ever since I switched to this brand.

Unlike dogs and cats, fish are colorblind, so their food must be brightly colored so that they can see it easily. In addition, fish associate bright colors with the quality of the food. It would be like how humans judge food based on how good it looks.

Although the pellets have vibrant colors, they are not artificial, making them safe for your fish to eat.

Not only do these pellets look good but they are also apparently pretty tasty. Whenever it is feeding time, all the fish in the tank would come out of their hiding places. Even the seemingly docile fish would join the small feeding frenzy.

I have a couple of danios that usually do not swim with the other fish. However, I noticed that they will join the group when it is feeding time.

As much as I do love this product, it does have a couple of issues. One is that it sinks much too slow. Some of my fish are middle feeders so they would wait until the food sinks a bit before they join the feeding frenzy.

In addition, these pellets are a bit too large for smaller fish like the tetras and danios, so I have to crush a couple of the pellets for them.

Pros
  • Contains spirulina and astaxanthin
  • Has a good chunk of protein
  • Brightly colored for easy visibility
  • Seems tasty as all my fish love this
Cons
  • Sinks too slow
  • A bit too big for tetras and guppies

As mentioned earlier, this fish food is the right size for mollies, but a tad too big for the others. However, once the pellets have soaked a bit of water, they will be soft enough for the smaller fish to nibble on them.

This fish food is also very economical. You will be getting a lot of content for an affordable price. In addition, it seems that it is quite tasty because all the fish in my community tank loves it. This makes it a good investment overall.

5. API Tropical PELLETS Sinking Fish Food

api tropical pellets sinking fish food

Although the label states that this is for tropical fish, I have been feeding these to my mollies and they seem fine. They look a lot healthier than they did before I made the switch to this product. If you have saltwater and freshwater aquariums, it would be perfectly fine to use this product on both.

This fish food contains all the necessary nutrients that your fish needs to thrive like they would in the wild. This product contains spirulina, which is a superfood with plenty of antioxidants.

Also, spirulina helps improve the health and appearance of the fish’s scales and skin. I have been feeding this food to my mollies and their colors are now much brighter than they were before. There are even a couple of splashes of color that were not there before I used this fish food.

Included in the nutrient content of this product is an abundance of proteins. Your mollies, even though they don’t grow quite as big as other aquarium fish, still need a lot of protein for proper development.

If you have young fish, I recommend feeding them with this fish food as this could help them grow faster. My mollies are just barely three weeks old and they are already the size of adults.

This fish food comes formulated in a way that makes it easy to break down and digest. Because most of this fish food is absorbed into the bodies of the fish, they will produce a lot less waste than before. I usually do partial water changes every week to keep the ammonia level low. However, since feeding my fish with this product, the amount of ammonia in the tank is always low to zero. This means less frequent water changes.

What I do not like about this fish food is that they are quite brittle. A couple of pellets left in the tank will cause the water to go cloudy. You will need to watch how many of these pellets you place in your tank. Never put more than what your fish can eat within five minutes. If there are leftovers, you need to fish them out immediately.

Pros
  • Great for tropical and freshwater fish
  • Contains all the key nutrients needed by fish
  • Promotes optimal growth and development
  • Easier to digest and does not produce that much waste
Cons
  • Breaks apart easily and clouds the water
  • Does not sink immediately

Although it is a hassle that you have to watch how much of this product you feed to your fish, the benefits are worth the slight inconvenience. If you don’t overfeed your fish, they will not create quite as much waste, thus keeping the ammonia level low to zero.

This is possible while providing your fish with all the nutrients and proteins it needs to grow healthy.

6. Omega One Freeze Dried Blood Worms

omega one freeze dried blood worms

Compared to regular fish food, blood worms (specifically the larvae) are chock-full of protein. So much that many fish breeders use them for conditioning their stock before entering the breeding season. I like feeding this to my fish fry once their mouths are big enough to eat, and I have never seen such staggering growth rates ever.

A lot of aquarium keepers try to avoid blood worm larvae because some of them carry harmful parasites. This is the reason why I never use live blood worms unless they came from a trusted source.

On the other hand, these are freeze-dried bloodworm larvae, so you are getting the same nutrients as live ones. However, the freeze-drying process makes the larvae much safer to consume because it kills any harmful bacteria and parasites. After almost a year of using this product, I have yet to see any adverse effects on my fish.

The freeze-drying process zaps away almost all of the moisture in the blood worms. This means they can last for a very long time even without refrigeration. This is as long as you keep the opened jar somewhere cool and dry.

Avoid placing it in your aquarium cabinet with the sump. I try to make this food last for as long as possible, and so far, I have managed to make one bottle last up to 3 months.

The best thing about it is that fish cannot get enough of it. As soon as it hits the water, all my fish would start to swarm and get into a feeding frenzy. Even the bottom dwellers would come out and grab the bits that reach the bottom if there are any. However, although your fish may love this food, it is not wise to feed it to them every day.

The reason why you should not feed blood worms to your fish too often is that they mainly consist of just protein and not much else. Your fish will not be getting all the right nutrients that they will need to thrive and remain healthy.

In addition, putting your fish on a mostly-protein molly fish diet will lead to them having severe constipation. Also, in the case of this particular product, I only use this as a treat sometimes for my fish because it is expensive.

Pros
  • Blood worms are excellent sources of protein
  • The freeze-drying process eliminates all bacteria and parasites
  • Does not contain any artificial colors or preservatives
  • It is very tasty
Cons
  • Should only be given to fish once or twice a week
  • A bit on the expensive side

Blood worms are among the most protein-rich foods you can feed to your fish. Although they are considerably more expensive compared to regular fish food, there’s no denying their awesome benefits.

Besides, you should not feed your fish with only this product exclusively. You still have to feed them some vegetables and/or fruits to give them balanced nutrition.

What to Look For When Buying a Food for Mollies

best food for molly fish

Do your mollies need specific food to stay healthy? Not necessarily. Although some brands provide fish food that they claim is best for mollies, many other choices provide the same results. To help you figure out which foods you should feed your fish, here are some pointers:

Protein Content

Although mollies do not grow beyond four inches most of the time, they will still need a lot of protein, especially when they are still young. A juvenile fish needs a lot of protein because it is at the stage of rapid growth.

Feeding your fish at this stage with a lot of protein will allow them to reach their full growth potential after just a month or so.

The products that provide the most protein are freeze-dried worms and larvae. However, there are also some pellets and flakes that contain a considerable amount of protein. Check the ingredients list to make sure you’re getting the right one.

Color-Enhancing Ingredients

Although your fish will undoubtedly look much better when they are healthy, you can further improve their appearance. You can do that by feeding them foods that contain color-enhancing ingredients.

Some of the ingredients you should look out for include spirulina, which is a superfood that also provides many other health benefits. Astaxanthin is also another ingredient that will enhance the colors of your fish, particularly the reds and oranges.

Size

Mollies are quite small fish, so it does not do them any favors to feed them with pellets or wafers that are too big for them to eat. You should get fish food that is small enough that they can swallow whole without any risk of choking.

Does not Cloud the Water

No one likes doing water changes, especially if they need to do it more than once a week due to the food clouding the water. I have had the displeasure of having to use a brand of fish food that immediately disintegrates in the water and makes the water cloudy every molly fish feeding time.

I hated that I had to change the water every couple of weeks. Choose a brand of fish food that is firm enough that it won’t turn to much while your fish are still feeding.
